Is Fox News indecent? It is according to Gloria Steeinem. She said "Fox News shows more sexualized violence and humiliation than probably any other network -- all in the name of condemning it -- while under-showing violence in Iraq, all in the name of supporting it." A new video from Brave New Films now on the Fox Attacks web site chronicles the many times that Fox News uses oddly inappropriately sexual video as background for stories, including wild spring break antics in Florida for a story on a beach area rapist. One of the worst offenders is Bill O’Reilly, who does stories on sex with a negative slant, all the while showing titilatting footage, such as when covering PETA using nude female images in ads, or the Girls Gone Wild" participants suing the producer, giving them a reason to show Girls Gone Wild footage. Whether condemning Internet Porn, the excesses of Spring Break, or famous people who get naked, they always seem to find visuals to illustrate the story.  And while I agree that what Fox does is hypocritical and solely for ratings, I do not agree with the action recommended by the web site. They are calling for a petition to demand that the FCC enact ala cart pricing for cable. I believe the FCC should keep their hands off of cable. More regulation and the ala cart programming are ideas also promoted by those who would prefer to see cable censored. Despite the claims that it would make cable cheaper, even the FCC internal study says it would do just the opposite- increase prices and also dramatically reduce choice. This despite the fact that the pro-censorship FCC chairman supports ala cart pricing because he believes it would reduce the smut on cable. It is misguided to think that ala cart pricing would keep you from having to pay for FoxNews- it is advertising that pays for it. Fox News denied the claims of its using sexually suggestive footage to get ratings, and also announced that they are changing their slogan to “They Jiggle- You decide.”

Congress is now considering extending job protection to gays and lesbians. They rejected the notion of job protection for transgendered people. And there is an even larger group of people that have no job protection based on sex. Swingers, polyamorists, BDSM practioners, and people who have had careers in the adult industry can all be fired when their private lives are discovered by their employers. Just ask Geoff Mena. He was never a porn star. He did design adult web sites as well as mainstream sites, he was a cameraman on adult productions, and he hosted an adult internet radio show under the name Chef Geoff. But he left that life to return to the job he loved and did for 12 years as a tennis instructor and director. He moved to Arizona to work at the Surprise city owned Tennis & Racquet Complex.  His direct supervisor knew about his past, but it was not something others knew. An anonymous letter outed him to city officials, and he was fired a few days later. Ironically, on September 11th,  the day that has since been used as an excuse to reduce our civil liberties. So, social conservatives want people to get out of the adult business, but when they do, they don’t want them to be able to have a job, and when they complain anonymously, city officials cave.  Geoff is back to doing website design. They may run a tennis complex, but the city officials in Surprise clearly have no balls.

Representative Trent Franks of Arizona asked in a committee on torture why they were not also discussing abortion, because some abortion techniques, he says, do torture the woman. He seems unaware that in the U.S., abortion is an elective, normally pain free procedure that does not involve you being kidnapped to a foreign country and held against your will for as long as they want without access to any legal protections. It doesn’t involve humiliation, freezing cold, sleep deprivation, or even break your water-boarding. Franks may oppose torture, but he is certainly willing to use tortured definitions of abortion.

Jackson Mississippi police are at it again. We did a Dragnet parody about them on the July 15th show. They’ve gone undercover again to arrest more desperados selling sex toys, which are illegal in the city.  Jackson police vice officers hauled out garbage bag loads of sex toys found during an undercover investigation at Adult Video and Books. They claim they burn all the toys they confiscate. Besides the fact that would produce toxic fumes, I think it is more likely that the toys from the July raid had just worn out and they needed new ones.

Message to college women- stop having sex, or make more money. Attributed to a change in the law promoted by the President, the cost of contraceptives on college campuses are skyrocketing. Ortho Tri-Cyclem Lo went from $16 a month last year to $52 a month. NuvaRing went from $12 to $50. And prices are continuing to climb, a cost that has always fallen on the backs of women, and not the men who want them on their backs. This Monday, New Yorkers are holding a rally in protest, sponsored by NOW-NYU, Law Students for Reproductive Choice, Planned Parenthood and other groups.

You would think that a fear of mutilation would be a legitimate reason to seek asylum in the United States. Not according to the Immigration Board of Appeals. When Alima Traore was a child in Mali, clitoris and vulva were cut off, as is still the practice there. If she is sent back, she not unreasonably fears the same thing will be done to any daughters she might have. It is not unreasonable at all, as 95 percent of the women in Mali have been so mutilated, a procedure done with an unsterilized saw-toothed knife and without anesthesia. Some Mali men believe that the clitoris secretes poison that can kill them or a baby. Nor did it matter that upon returning to Mali, she will be forced to marry her first cousin, forced to have sex that due to her mutilation will not be pleasant, and live as little better than a slave. Oddly, women who have been subjected to forced sterilization are routinely granted asylum in the U.S. Any woman who wants to keep her body intact, or protect her children from such mutilation, should be given asylum here. If enough women come here, maybe we can start to depopulate these barbarous countries where women are little better than slaves and are tortured and mutilated with far too little outcry from the international community. What is the difference between this and allowing black slaves to escape to freedom in the north during the civil war? One difference- as bad as slavery was, it was never a custom to brutally mutilate them to keep them in line.

Science

You know what would be a really bad idea? Toy beads that when swallowed, turn into the date rape drug gamma-hydroxy butyrate, more commonly know as GHB. And an especially bad idea would be to make the toy out of hundreds of small beads, just perfect for swallowing. But through the miracle of science, that is exactly what happens with the very popular popular children’s toy called Aqua Dots. Gee, pretty easily swallowed beads that can cause unconsciousness and memory loss. Its like a pedophile priest’s answered prayer beads. The toy has been pulled from the market in several countries, including the U.S.

According to new research on initial attraction by Ben Jones in the Face Research Laboratory at the University of Aberdeen, "It does seem to be a sort of narcissistic thing. People are attracted to people who are attracted to them. It's really a very basic effect that we are all, at some level at least, aware of - which is that if you smile at people and you maintain eye contact, it makes you more attractive." He said the work challenges most previous studies of facial attractiveness that have focused on physical characteristics, such as a preference for symmetrical faces or masculine versus feminine features. It makes perfect sense. Am I going to focus my attention on the gorgeous woman giving me the death glare, or the slightly plainer woman looking mildly interested and not quite so disgusted. The odds of getting laid go way up if I choose the later. Maybe its less about attraction than a realistic assessment of the odds.

Another bit of research seems to show a time when women are more attracted to men with really masculine faces. When they are ovulating and most likely to get pregnant. According to Heather Rupp, PhD, a research fellow at the Kinsey Institute, their study shows that women are most attracted to sex with masculine, high-risk men during ovulation. It seems contrary to common sense, you would think this would be the time women would want to be the most cautious. But in this study, they did not rely on what women said in their assessment of men, they looked at their brains, which showed more activity in the part of the brains linked to risk taking.  During ovulation, the women also had weaker brain responses in brain areas linked to inhibition and risk evaluation. The study was too small to be definitive, but it does pose some interesting questions. According to Rupp. “"At ovulation, women may prioritize fertilization and find masculine men more rewarding and less risky. Towards the end of the menstrual cycle, when hormones are preparing for potential pregnancy, the priority may shift from mating to finding a low-risk, stable partner who can provide more parental investment and resources." So maybe its true, nice guys do finish last. Or at least, their best shot is towards the end of the menstrual cycle.

But then, in a really confusing study from Queen's University in Ontario, Canada, comes this bit of data: It appears that a woman who walks with a seductive sway of her hips is unlikely to be ovulating. If you had to guess, you’d think it would be the other way around. The women that Men overwhelmingly found had the sexiest walk were those who were in the least fertile part of their cycle. The study by Meghan Provost, is to be published in the US journal Archives of Sexual Behaviour. For nice guys who might be intimidated by those sexy walks, based on the Kinsey research, that might be a clue that you have a shot. And for the very masculine sharks who would seem to be drawn to this expressive sexual lure- if this research is correct, they should probably just walk the other way.

Researcher David Levy at the University of Maastricht in the Netherlands completed his Ph.D. on human-robot relationships. He predicts humans will be having sex with robots in five years, and will eventually be allowed to marry them in the United States by 2050. I can see it now. Social conservatives will be screaming that if we allow that, the next thing people will want to do is marry canopeners.  

The Australians know a little something about getting off. Their 2003 study showed that frequent masturbation reduced the risk of prostate cancer. The latest study from Australia shows that daily ejaculation makes for healthier sperm and reduces the DNA damage in sperm. The study was presented by Dr David Greening at the American Society for Reproductive Medicine conference last month. The idea of saving it up when trying to get your partner pregnant seems to be little more than a myth. So, once a day, that’s all we ask.

Study after study shows that abstinence only education programs are complete and total failures. Another is just out that says the same thing. The study findings state: "At present there does not exist any strong evidence that any abstinence program delays the initiation of sex, hastens the return to abstinence or reduces the number of sexual partners" among teenagers. The study, headed by Douglas Kirby, a senior research scientist at ETR Associates, found that while contrary to claims of abstinence only proponents, more comprehensive sex education programs were having "positive outcomes" including teenagers "delaying the initiation of sex, reducing the frequency of sex, reducing the number of sexual partners and increasing condom or contraceptive use." The report, which was based on a review of research into teenager sexual behavior, was being released Wednesday by the nonpartisan National Campaign to Prevent Teen and Unplanned Pregnancy. In other words, the programs favored by the president, as study after study shows, do just the opposite of what is claimed, a familiar pattern for this president. But the Democrats, following the Republicans lead that believing in science is no more relevant than believing in Santa Claus, gave Bush all the money he requested for abstinence education. Money not just flushed down the drain, money not just poorly monitored and siphoned off into the hands of religious groups and often frittered away and even misappropriated, but money that goes towards teaching ignorance and psychologically assaulting another generation with a fear of sex. It seems like America, home of the brave, is run by a government whose sole purpose now seems to be to make us the land of the afraid. Perhaps because the science they claim to ignore also shows us that fearful people tend to be bad decision makers, and good decision makers would vote these clowns out of office.

Whacko of the Week and Sexvestigation Combined

Of all of the presidential candidates, we probably dislike Guiliani the most. He is an opportunistic embellisher with a one-note campaign. He is a clone of the current Bush, but without his intelligence, honesty, and wisdom. And yet, he never quite made it to whacko of the week status, unlike almost all of the other Republican candidates. Sure, he has a hard-on for getting rid of pornography, and is no fan of art that offends him and is happy to shut it down even in museums. At the same time, he cross-dresses in public, had affairs he publicly acknowledges, married his cousin, claims to be pro-choice even though he says he would nominate Supreme Court judges who would take away that choice, and moved in with a gay couple. He’s all over the map, but he just doesn’t say the regular crazy anti-sex stuff that gets you the coveted whacko of the week designation. But, he did just accept the endorsement and stood side by side with a man who puts all of the other whackos to shame. Someone so crazy, it seems crazy to even be seen standing next to him. Pat Robertson is almost the dictionary definition of whacko, and few people are more whacko about sex. Sure, Guilliani wants to win the fundamentalists, but aligning yourself with Pat Robertson?

Pat Robertson has probably said more stupid things about sex than any other human being alive. With his daily 700 Club, he has had literally thousands of opportunities, and he takes them. Sure, he says crazy and unbelievably un-christlike things about everything, like calling for the assassination of foreign leaders he disliked like Venezuela’s Hugo Chavez and North Korea's Kim Jong-Il. Of course, he didn’t have potentially lucrative business relationships with them, unlike his friend the notoriously corrupt dictator Mubutu of Zaire or the mass murdering warlord Charles Taylor of Liberia. Robertson claimed his power of prayer turned back hurricanes. He told Dover Pennsylvania that they could no longer turn to god for help since the court overturned their attempt to put intelligent design into the schools.

But, sex, this is a subject he never fails to target some of his craziest crazy at. In fact, in selecting Robertson crazy quotes, we have to be selective. There are more gems than in his diamond mines, and yes, he owns diamond mines. We could do an entire show of just Robertson whacko quotes, but we’ll just select some of our favorites.

Of course, just because Robertson is crazy, does not mean he is stupid. Even when he makes insane comments, he can find a way to make money off of it. Look at his claim that Katrina was God’s vengeance for homosexuality. Sure, comments like that bring in donations from his core followers. But like so many who got money from the government with little accountability for relief aid, Robertson was literally first in line. Okay, second. The disastrously mismanaged FEMA seemed to be very efficient at doing one thing- doling out cash for political allies. And Robertson is very politically connected. In the press release from FEMA listing relief organizations to donate to, instead of the usual list of organizations experienced in disaster relief, this list was almost all faith-based groups. And Robertson’s Operation Blessing was the second one listed. And like many of the others, his organization had little experience in disaster relief. In fact, it is difficult to see what Operation Blessings does other than skim a little of the money off the top and pass the money on to other organizations. This is the same Operation Blessings that used their tax-free cargo planes to ferry employees and equipment to Pat Robertson’s diamond mines.

Pat Robertson is a money making machine, and little gets in the way. When he had a big deal with the government of China, he suddenly supported their population control methods to the shock of many. And his support of Liberia’s Charles Taylor may have more to do with his gold mining company that was set to extract gold from Liberia than his belief in Taylor’s Christian leadership. That leadership was cut short after he was indicted by a U.N. war crimes tribunal for organizing attacks that included mass rape and hacking off limbs. And although Mubutu was notoriously corrupt, what appealed to Robertson were the timber and mining concessions he received from him.

No one knows how much Robertson is worth, how much he makes, or much of the donations wind up in his pocket. And he’s so well politically connected, that investigations of him ultimately go nowhere. Just look at the state of Virgina’s attempts. Although the investigation found wrongdoing and exposed the cargo plane abuse, Republican Attorney general Mark Earley ordered the results sealed and overturned the recommendations of the prosecutor, dropping the charges. Robertson had been his single largest campaign contributor.

So, when Robertson makes his crazy anti-sex comments, does it reveal the thought processes of an insane man who thinks god talks personally to him, or the calculated red meat for his core donators from a corrupt and manipulative man far more dedicated to money than men, who worships mammon more than the lord. You decide, as we present some of his choicer offerings.

Let’s start with 911 and his good friend Jerry Falwell. Falwell said on his 700 club show: "The ACLU's got to take a lot of blame for this...throwing God out successfully with the help of the federal court system, throwing God out of the public square, out of the schools. The abortionists have got to bear some burden for this because God will not be mocked. And when we destroy 40 million little innocent babies, we make God mad. I really believe that the pagans and the abortionists and the feminists and the gays and the lesbians who are actively trying to make that an alternative lifestyle...all of them who have tried to secularize America. I point the finger in their face and say, 'You helped this happen.' Robertson responded I couldn’t agree more. Then later he reemphasized his belief that the attack on New York was sanctioned by God in punishment for abortion and Internet porn.

Robertson insists that god talks to him personally. In an interview with Rita Braver, he explained how god told him to ask a woman about her sex life. He told the woman her asthma was a caused because she blamed herself for her husband’s impotence, and then he instantly faith healed her asthma. Why he didn’t faith heal her husband’s impotence at the same time is a mystery between him and god. Then he went on about how much faster he was at solving these problems than a psychiatrist who could take months to get at the problem and how much cheaper it was. Except what he asks for his not a bill for services, unlike a psychiatrist, but a monthly donation for the rest of your life. What an asshole.

Robertson commented on the signing of a law (SB 1441) by California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger forbidding any organization which accepts state funds from discriminating against lesbian, homosexual and trans-gendered individuals, calling it a “shocking development” claiming that the new law signals the end of the “age.” Could he mean the end of the age of discrimination? Didn’t think so.

Let’s mine the endless resource of the 700 club. Here he is on homosexuality:

“When lawlessness is abroad in the land, the same thing will happen here that happened in Nazi Germany. Many of those people involved in Adolph Hitler were Satanists. Many of them were homosexuals. The two things seem to go together.” Except, of course, that Hitler and many of his minions considered themselves Christians, and that they rounded up and killed homosexuals.

"[Homosexuals]want to come into churches and disrupt church services and throw blood all around and try to give people AIDS and spit in the face of ministers." Uh-huh.

Referring to homosexuality, he said “This conduct is anti-social, and it is a pathology. It is a sickness, and it needs to be treated. It doesn’t need to be taught in the classroom as a preferred way of life...” He’s apparently never been a gay party- they are very social. And no classroom anywhere ever has taught that homosexuality is a preferred way of life- maybe it just seems that way to him.

"The radical left is doing everything they can to destroy the moral fiber of America. They want to do away with the family. I am absolutely persuaded one of the reasons so many lesbians are at the forefront of the pro-choice movement is because being a mother is the unique characteristic of womanhood, and these lesbians will never be mothers naturally, so they don't want anybody else to have that privilege either." So how come so many lesbians are raising their own children? Does he even know how this stuff works?

“The concept, the word for homosexual behavior is sodomy. That is what is used in the official documents. It is sodomy. It is repugnant. It has been prohibited and proscribed by sane society throughout countless millennia, centuries. People have understood that it is wrong. Now in America, not only is it happening, it is getting civil rights protection in the law, and these people are invading churches.” Oh yes, and sodomizing the priests and ministers. Oh wait, it’s the other way around.

Of course, there is much more to Robertson than gay bashing, although we could have continued on this topic for quite awhile. Number two on his hit parade is abortion.

"You can't have a society where you murder 40 million unborn babies and think you're not going to have people going out and murdering adults. And I'm not talking about murdering abortionists. I'm talking about just killing each other in neighborhoods and killing elderly people and the rest of it. We're a society that is obsessed with murder. The people claim to be humanists, but in the name of humanism, there's some of the greatest murders taken place in mankind's history." And yet you support Guilliani, who fully supports Bush’s war that has directly led to more loss of innocent life than most of us could have imagined. Seems to me the killing mostly takes place in the name of not humanism, but politics.

And if this nation continues to slaughter a million-and-a-half babies per year, innocent little babies who never hurt anybody, God Almighty is going to exact from this nation one adult for every baby we’ve killed. And right now the total is up somewhere in the neighborhood of 32 to 35 million. That’s how many adults are going to die in America before God’s wrath is finished on this nation.”  I’ve got news for Robertson- the ratio of death is one death for every birth. Its sort of the formula. Its called mortality.

Of course, sex education is one of his biggest nightmares. Lots of choice goodies to choose from here:

“[School children are] taught every kind of bizarre sex you can imagine. They’re being taught oral sex, they’re being taught anal sex, they’re being taught homosexual sex, they’re being taught sex with animals. All this with public taxpayer money, what’s being called value-free sex education.” Admittedly, this is an older quote from the beginning the abstinence movement, where now they are not taught anything, all at taxpayer expense. And to be fair, I think the sex with animals stuff was only taught in the farm states.

“What Planned Parenthood is doing is absolutely contrary to everything Christian. It is teaching kids to fornicate, teaching people to have adultery, teaching people to get involved in every kind of bestiality, homosexuality, lesbianism -- everything that the Bible condemns. And teaching us to be absolutely without moral restraint.” Gee, I don’t recall Planned Parenthood teaching people to just make up shit about organizations they want to vilify. Maybe some moral restraint in that regard would be good.

And as you might expect from a man who seems so obsessed with the irresistibility of homosexual sex, he does not see women as equals. In 1989 he said “...[T]here’s a difference from birth. Now, the male mind thinks in certain attitudes...But the key in terms of mental -- it has nothing to do with physical -- is chess. There’s never been a woman grand master chess player. And if, you know, once you get one, then I’ll buy some of the feminism, but until that point...” Let’s see now- There were two at the time in the Untied States, both from Georgia. And in 1992, Judit Polgar became the youngest grand master ever at 15. She even beat Boris Spassky in an exhibition match.

That did not seem to change Robertson’s mind about feminism though. In 1992, the year Polgar became a grand master, Roberstons said this classic quote “The feminist agenda is not about equal rights for women. It is about a socialist, anti-family political movement that encourages women to leave their husbands, kill their children, practice witchcraft, destroy capitalism and become lesbians.” 

The Roberston quotes are literally endless. You could spend days quoting the stupid things he says. But ultimately, he is a business man who has fueled his enormous business success through tax free donors. His personal wealth is estimated at somewhere between $200 million  and a billion dollars, and he controls a vast tax free empire with little regulation or oversight. He is a businessman, and for reasons that may later become clear, he thinks guilliani will be good for his business despite his opposing much of what guillini stands for.
