This is the Jeff Booth Show for September 21st, 2008. brought to you by the Center for Sexual Expression and Education, and Erotic University. I’m Jeff Booth. We’ve been covering a lot of politics lately, so we are doing an extra long entertainment section to try and get caught up with all of the entertainment news. We don’t leave out the politics, though, and we have a lot of sex related political news, including anti-gay logic, an insane British anti-porn law, a really crazy proposed antiporn law in Florida, possible decriminalized prostitution in a California city, the real story behind the anti-gay firefighters suing San Diego who claim they aren’t anti-gay, and more of the Sarah Palin Looking Glass world. Our Sexvestigation looks at the claim that David Duchovny is in a sex addiction rehab facility. Just click on the story you want to listen to, and thanks for clicking in. Politics I’ve tried. I’ve read the arguments against gay marriage over and over, trying to get a handle on their thinking so that I can counter them with logical arguments. No matter how hard I look at it, I can never understand their reasoning enough to come up with an argument. In Friday’s Los Angeles Times, self-proclaimed Democrat and liberal David Blackenhorn argues for Proposition 8 to overturn the California Supreme Court gay marriage ruling, and he argues against gay marriage. It’s a long rambling piece, courtesy of the fact that I think the L.A. Times no longer has any editors on staff. I had to reread it several times. I still don’t understand his argument. He goes on about his support of freedom and how he is not against gays and not homophobic. But ultimately his argument against gay marriage seems to boil down to it deprives children of their birthright. I think. For him, marriage is all about having children and preserving the rights of a child to live with both his biological mother and father. So he wants to deny gays the right to marry because he believes in a perfect world where all children live with both their biological parents, a perfect world that barely exists for heterosexuals let alone gays? David Blankenhorn is founder of the Institute for American Values, and I guess those of us who question his values aren’t good Americans. Some of his values include forcing women into marriage as a cure for domestic violence. I guess his reasoning is pretty consistent across the issues. Britain’s insane anti-porn law goes into effect in just three months. It makes possession of certain types of pornography a crime. What types? No one knows. The law makes it a crime to possess material that is "pornographic", depicts "explicit realistic extreme acts" and is "grossly offensive, disgusting or otherwise of an obscene character". It’s a definition completely without any agreed upon meaning. I love laws that can put you in jail for committing a crime no one can define. An advocacy group presented pictures from Madonna’s Sex book to attorneys, and two of the five found that the pictures violated the new law. You might go to jail for having a book by Madonna in your home. As we pointed out in an earlier story, it coud make some of the art in British museums illegal, since it applies to photos, and drawings. British citizens are encouraged to pour through any sex related materials in their homes to find those that violate the law and destroy them. Problem is, no one has any idea what should be destroyed. And how is the government going to know what you have in the privacy of your own home? That remains unanswered, but the answer could be awfully disturbing. No police agency currently understands the new law. Celebrities such as Gwen Stefani and Dita von Tease are joining advocacy groups in opposing the law. The most frightening aspect of all of this is that the law might encourage something similar being adopted here, if they can just figure a clever way around that pesky First Amendment. And trust me, they are working on it. Especially in Florida. In Nassau County, a proposed ban would eliminate all porn sales. Outgoing Nassau County Commissioner Marianne Marshall is pushing the ban, which would outlaw the sale of any sexually explicit material that depicts "multiple penetration by multiple partners of body orifices"; "visible penetration during intercourse, sodomy, or oral sodomy"; "visible ejaculation, urination, menstruation, bowel movements, ejaculate or feces"; and "visible penetration of a bodily orifice with a digit, hand, foot, or inanimate object." Its basically a blanket ban on every adult movie ever made. And then there is this from the proposed ordinance: “The purpose of this Ordinance is to afford the citizens of Nassau County a civil remedy to enjoin the distribution of pornographic materials for profit and commercial purposes within the community, and to recover civil penalties and damages. Further, this Ordinance shall provide these remedies to any church or religious organization, or other representative group of organization." Are you fucking kidding me? They want to give churches the right to sue the makers of adult content for so-called damages? What the hell would that even be? And have they never heard of the concept of a separation of church and state? They want to give the church censorship powers? Historically that has proven to be a really bad idea. And the law claims that it applies to the entire state. Oh sure, the county will be sued to overturn the law. But if you want to do that, there is a provision about malicious lawsuits that requires the person wanting to sue the county to first post a $10,000 bond. Or the part that give a judge the right to issue a ban on adult sales by any retailer if there is a lawsuit filed against them under the law, even a lawsuit filed by a church group. This would be a model law for nations like Iran to adopt. Wow. We should be able to throw people in jail for so flagrantly violating the constitution by writing laws like this. Four firefighters are suing San Diego County. They claim that they were sexually harassed at the gay pride parade they were forced to ride in by a supervisor. I mean that the supervisor forced them to ride in the parade, not that he sexually harassed them. They claim that the sexual harassment came from the people in the crowd along the parade route. I am a big supporter of firefighters. They are some of the bravest people on the planet. They risk their lives to save lives and property. They are real heroes, every single day. And with all that bravery, I have to admit I am surprised that these four brave men were afraid of some catcalls and sexually suggestive comments from the crowd. They face roaring fires that can kill them, but they can’t face some gay men in a crowd who might be thinking about fucking them? And they are asking for reimbursement for therapy sessions? Because of catcalls? Keep in mind that these firefighters work in Hillcrest, a gay community. They are asking for $3 million in their lawsuit. I normally think of sexual harassment as harassment in the workplace by superiors. I guess the crowd did pay taxes and so technically the firefighters did work for them, but that seems a stretch. And the firefighters go out of their way to claim that they have nothing against the gays, while at the same time decrying the parade as a political event that promotes gay marriage. Oh, and they are represented by the Thomas More Law Center, a radical fundamentalist Christian legal organization law firm that was behind the infamous failed Kitzmiller v. Dover modern Scopes trial in Pennsylvania, in an attempt to inject teaching intelligent design into the schools. The same law center working with Christian groups in Florida to help reverse what they call the tide of the radical homosexual agenda. The law center that fights same-sex couples benefits in court. Yeah, the firefighters have nothing against the gays. Will prostitution become legal in San Francisco? Proposition K will be on the November ballot. Surprisingly, Mayor Gavin Newsome opposes it, claiming it will attract a criminal element and hamper efforts to fight human trafficking. He is apparently unaware that human trafficking and prostitution run by criminals thrive best in an environment where prostitution is illegal. Legalize it and upstanding citizens can get into the business. Criminalize it, and everyone in San Francisco in the prostitution business is already a criminal. And is Newsome unaware that there is prostitution going on right now in San Francisco, with a criminal element already in place? A current environment where cops can force prostitutes to have sex with them, and something that every prostitute I have interviewed has says goes on all of the time. An underground environment where it is much easier to abuse women. An underground environment where sex workers are less likely to use condoms and protect themselves than in places where prostitution is legal. One of the reasons condoms are not used is because police sieze them and use them as evidence in prosecutions. Believe it or not, in many places in this country, the mere possession of condoms can be used as evidence that you are a prostitute. Our laws against prostitution, like are laws against obscenity, make little sense, provide lots of opportunity for law enforcement abuse, and hurt the very women they claim these laws are supposed to protect. While not legalizing prostitution, Proposition K would tell police to not focus law enforcement on prostitutes but instead focus their attention and money on people who prey upon prostitutes, including thieves and pimps. It makes sense, and its about time, and I have no idea whether it will pass or not. Remember when Sarah Palin tried to defuse the rumor that her child wasn’t actually hers and that it was really her underage daughter’s by revealing that her underage daughter was actually pregnant now? Her new arguments about why she fired public safety commissioner Walt Monegan are sort of like that. Its all about the so-called Troopergate scandal, the one she said she would cooperate with but through her personally appointeed Attorney General is now ordering everyone to ignore subpoenas as if she had already been elected Dick Cheney. Hmmm. Involving an Attorney General in an effort to cover up abuse of power and political machinations within the justice system. That sounds str5angely familiar. Anyway, the scandal is that she used her political powers for personal reasons in firing Monegan because he would not fire the State Trooper who had divorced her sister. She fired Monegan, and replaced him with a man she claimed would be better at the job- until he had to be removed for repeated instances of sexual harassment. And at first she claimed she simply offered Monegan a different job- and it would only involve a paltry $10,000 cut in salary. He quit instead of taking the transfer. Then she claimed she actually fired him because he wasn’t doing a good enough job hiring new troopers despite her cutting his budget, and because he wasn’t strong enough fighting alcohol abuse issues. Except the previous story was that the job she wanted to transfer him to was head of Alcohol Beverage Control. Her latest story is even harder to believe. She is claiming that she fired him because he was too aggressive in wanting to reduce sexual assault and child molestation in the state of Alaska, a state with highest inciodence of rape per capita in the U.S. It is a state where men far outnumber women, and that disparity seems to encourage a lot of sexual violence against women and children. And Monegan wanted to do something about it by seeking federal funding for legislation that Palin did not approve- an initiative to fight sexual assault crimes. Specifically, it would fund hiring retired troopers and law enforcement officials to go target the most egregious sex crimes- including child molestation. His support of that initiative Palin claims was insubordination. She built a road to nowhere with federal funds, but would not support federal funding of an initiative that would go after child molesters and rapists? I guess that is consistent with making rape victims pay for their own rape kits.
Entertainment The next version of Internet Explorer will have what is being dubbed a porn mode. It’s a private browsing feature called “InPrivate” which might have better been called the one-handed browsing option. It lets you take control of what tracks your browser leaves that might allow others to follow what you’ve been reading or viewing. To promote the new feature, Microsoft will follow up on their new “I’m a PC” ads with “I’m a PC masturbator” ads. Talk about an awkward moment. In an interview on a CBS morning show, host Maggie Rodriguez was talking with rocker Bryan Adams. She began talking about his song Summer of 69, and asked if it was autobiographical. He had to explain to her that the song was not literally about the year 1969, but about sex in the summer, and that 69 was a specific sexual reference. She replied with, “Okay, didn’t know that…” Star Trek’s George Takei has boldly gone where no woman has gone before- he married his gay partner of many years, Brad Altman. They have been together for 21 years, but have only been able to get married now because of the California Supreme Court outlawing the ban on gay marriage. He joins Ellen Degeneres on the list of best known recent gay weddings, a list that conservatives desperately want to overturn with Proposition 8, which would reinstate the ban. It may not work, however- the latest polls show Proposition 8 tanking with only 40 percent support. Ray Boltz, Christian music superstar, has outed himself. Turns out he is and has always been gay. This despite having a wife and kids. He said “I denied it ever since I was a kid. I became a Christian and thought that that was the way to deal with this and I prayed hard and tried for 30-some years and then at the end, I was just going, 'I'm still gay. I know I am.' And I just got to the place where I couldn't take it anymore... when I was going through all this darkness, I thought, 'Just end this.'” He proclaimed “If this is the way God made me then this is the way I'm going to live..." Not surprisingly, his former supportive Christian community has been less than supportive, with some comparing his homosexuality to an addiction to crack cocaine. They are shocked and outraged, but really, there were a lot of clues. Take, for example, his hit songs “Hot for Jesus” and “Only my Saviour Knows How to Do Me Right”. Transformers star Megan Fox has also come out, as a bi-girl. As if guys weren’t already crazy enough about her. In the October issue of GQ she describes her obsessive affair with a stripper who worked at L.A.’s famous strip cub, the Body Shop. In the interview she said “"Look, I'm not a lesbian. I just think that all humans are born with the ability to be attracted to both sexes. I mean, I could see myself in a relationship with a girl _ Olivia Wilde is so sexy she makes me want to strangle a mountain ox with my bare hands. She's mesmerizing. And lately I've been obsessed with Jenna Jameson, but ... oh boy." All she needs to do is talk about her love of sports and beer, and she’ll make a lot of guy’s perfect woman list. Pastor Dave Allison of Havens Corners Church of Christ in Christian Union in Blacklick, Ohio, is quite upset about Katy Perry’s catchy song about bisexual exploration, “I kissed a girl (and I Liked It)”. SO he put up on the church sign what he called a loving warning, which translates from conservative Christian speak into a hate filled threat. The sign read “I kissed a girl and I liked it- Then I went to hell.” He really needs to read his bible. The old testament has all sorts of proscriptions against homosexuality, specifically man on man sex, along with a lot of other rules that we otherwise think are just crazy, like having to marry your dead brothers wife, but it’s a little light on the lesbian thing. Girl on girl sex- doesn’t talk a lot about it. Which makes sense since those old testament guys had multiple wives, and when they were off slaughtering, the wives got lonely.
And in who is getting naked now, seems everybody has a sex tape scandal lately. Peral harbor star Josh Hartnett was caught having sex with his girlfriend in a SoHo hotel’s library. They closed the curtains but forgot about the surveillance cameras. Then it turns out that Baywatch former child star Jeremy Jackson is in footage with adult star Sky Lopez. And glamour girl Danielle Lloyd appears naked in footage shot by an ex-boyfriend. Why do these famous people keep getting caught on camera. They seem to forget the simple formula- celebrity plus camera plus sex equals mountains of publicity. Ohhhh… Halloween is just around the corner, so we’ll start our look at sex in the movies with the many new horror releases. Scientology founder L. Ron Hubbard and occultist Aleister Crowley as the backstory to a modern day horror film? That’s part of the premise of Chemical Wedding, where a modern day classics professor gets into a virtual reality suit that has him channeling the late Crowley. If you know anything about Aleister Crowley, you know that orgies are inevitable. And being a horror film, things do not go well for the naked Helen Millar. Boy, the orgies I have attend are pretty uneventful in comparison. Hey, blood and sex go together like… Okay, they don’t go together, except in the movies. Case in point- Blood and Sex Nightmare. Its got the blood. Its got the sex. And lots of both. I am still unclear why the vast majority of films with sex and nudity also have slaughter and mayhem. People just can’t seem to fuck without getting cut to pieces. A young woman and her boyfriend head off to Pleasure Mountain Adult Retreat., a campground for swingers. Sounds like fun. We have a club near here called Freedom Acres that has adult camping trips for swingers. Everyone seems to have a great time. In this movie, though, instead of adult fun, you have to deal with the serial rapist groundskeeper and a homicidal ghost who hates sex, and resents the partiers in his domain. He resents them so much that he finds brutal ways to dispatch them. I must point out that I have been to swinger retreats, vacations, and getaways, and this movie does not accurately portray the swinger experience. It really is a lot more fun than this. The Awakening: Zombie Night 2 is the typical post apocalyptic zombie tale, but these zombies are a little on the whimpy side. You can whip off your bra, set it afire, and prove you are both liberated and self-sufficient by using the burning bra as a weapon against zombies. And you can get into a catfight with zombies all around and worry more about the catfight. And worry more about a rapist than the nearby zombies. Even though the zombies aren’t all that scary, at least there are four nude scenes. From zombies to vampires- and what is a modern vampire story without a little girl girl action, in this case with main characters Anna Walton and Morven Macbeth, I mean Morven the Scottish play. Vampire Diary is set in London’s goth scene, with vampire wannabe’s who wear fake fangs and dink each other’s blood with the assist of a razor to make small incisions. Its known as the weekend vampire scene, and enter documentary filmmaker Hollie, who s making a film about it. She falls for and into bed with one of the women in her documentary, only to discover she is much more than just a fake vampire on weekends. Hell Ride isn’t a horror film. It’s a biker flick, updated by Quentin Tarantino in the grindhouse style. And what is a biker flick without lots of nudity? Much more than in the Grindhouse movie. Its got the three Bs, bikes, boobs and brawls. Sure, I have seen people fuck like bunnies, but the movie Hank and Mike takes this to a bizarre extreme. Yes, it really is about adult men in bunny costumes. Its sort of an Easter riff on Bad Santa. Like Santa movies, this plays it as if there really are men doing Easter Bunny duty. But with the sex scenes with young women like Aniela Kurylo, this is certainly not for kids. What’s not to like about a bed full of half naked girls, in this case Holly Eglington, Lucie Guest, and Julia Sandberg? Well, it might have been nice to have an actual good movie wrapped around this scene. It’s a film adaptation of a video game, directed by Ewe Boll noted for his dreadful video adaptations, and it even has Vern Troyer, but no explicit scenes unlike in his infamous sex tape. Although there is a plot to have him raped by monkeys. Dave Foley does appear in a full frontal nude scene, but its not sexy. And in the world of porn, adult star Veronica Rayne has opened a new restaurant and lounge with adult star and partner Jack Vegas. Its in Tarzana in porn valley, better known as the San Fernando Valley, a suburb of L.A. It is called Oxygen. "We wanted to create a relaxed environment where people could have good food and a great time," Rayne said. Her latest film is the Get Smart porn parody Get Smartass, where she plays Agent 69, and she can be seen in the upcoming sequel to the huge porn hit, Pirates. Oxygen is a porn friendly locale, with booths dedicated to adult performers. And who doesn’t love ass-kickin’ girls on Roller skates? That is the premise behind Adam and Eve and Zero Tolerance’s Roller Dollz, set in the exciting world of women’s roller derby. The vid offers four hours on two discs, music videos, and a blend of big budget and gonzo, which sort of seems a contradiction of sorts. It stars Bree Olson, Courtney Cummz and Kayden Kross. It is getting a bid promotional push, with a tour featuring the stars of the film, a calendar, and a surprising amount of mainstream media attention for something that isn’t a takeoff on 1960s television.
Sexvestigation The latest word out is that Californication star David Duchovny has checked himself into a rehab center. A rehab center for sex addiction. Maybe. But it seems more than a little ironic that many people would call his character on Californication a sex addict. And we know he has a wicked sense of humor. I’m wondering if this was more of a publicity stunt than anything else. And besides, one of the typical things they do in sex addiction rehabilitation is to make you go cold turkey from sex. Not have sex with Tia Leone? Are you kidding me? So, how do we know whether David Duchovny is a sex addict. Its simple really. Because there is no such thing as sex addiction. I know it has become a common term in our culture for just about anyone having more sex that we are, but there really is no such thing. Not as a scientifically defined medical condition. The AMA does not recognize it. The America Psychiatric Association doesn’t recognize it. I was raised by an alcoholic father, so I know a little about addiction. It is a very serious problem. But you can define alcoholism. You can define drug addiction. You can look the definitions up in medical books. Sex addiction, however, is an idea promoted by Dr Patrick Carnes. According to Dr. Gloria Brame, Carnes believes that” sex is bad and too much sex is horrible; that porn is evil; that masturbation is wrong; that so-called perversion (i.e., SM) is sick; and that there is such a thing as a "normal" amount of sex that every person should have.” So the founder of the concept of sex addiction is a complete anti-sex whack job. Basically, sex addiction is pseudoscience. Addiction is an uncontrolled and uncontrollable use of a potentially harmful substance. Sex is not a harmful substance. It’s not a substance. Sex is an activity. One we all do, and one that helps us keep our mental health and reduce stress. Sure, there can be compulsive behaviours that can wreak havoc on your life. But they are not addictions. An addict has to stop using the substance that he is addicted to. While some so-called sex addiction clinics promote that idea as well, you can’t just stop having sex. Let alone the damage that would do to a marriage. I’ve taken a number of the are you a sex addict tests, and by golly, some of them have determined that yes, my name is Jeff Booth, and I am a sex addict. Except that my life is pretty good, I have a terrific marriage, a very diverse sex life, and am pretty happy about the sex in my life. According to sex expert Dr. Marty Klein, in 21 years as a therapist he has never seen a case where the label sex addiction was clinically useful. I have heard from and read about countless other therapists who agree with him. He says that virtually no one in the field of sexology believes in the concept of sex addiction. Here is how he describes the basic definition of sex addiction:
• Sex is most healthy in committed, monogamous, heterosexual relationships • There are "obvious" limits to healthy sexual expression (for example, masturbation more than once a day) • Choosing to use sex to feel better about yourself or to escape from problems is unhealthy.
