Senator Tom Coburn, who was one of our recent Whackos of the Week, continues to justify his inclusion there. He recently partnered up with former Senator Rick Santorum, who believes that homosexuality and bestiality are essentially the same thing. Together they managed to get an official U.S. Government study done on comprehensive sex education. It was released under the auspices of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Service's Administration for Children and Families. The findings were not unexpectedly negative.  Recent actual scientific studies, including 1 10 year government study, show abstinence only sex education a total failure. To deal with that, according to Robert Rector of the conservative Heritage Foundation, the best way to defend abstinence-only programs is to attack comprehensive sex education. Thus, this report. As is typical with this administration, they made sure that science did not get in the way of their conclusions. To do this, they farmed out the research to the Medical Institute for Sexual Health. Sounds official, but this Texas based longtime Bush ally gets its money from federal abstinence only education funds. That’s like paying McDonald’s to do a study on the benefits of an all vegetarian low-fat diet when you also have a lucrative contract with them supplying big macs to obese orphans.

Mark your calendars for July 26th – 29th in Milwaukee. They are designated as Paul Hill Days, an event sponsored by Pro-Life Virginia and other anti-abortion groups. Paul Hill was arrested and executed for murdering abortion provider Dr. John Britton. As a bonus, he also murdered the volunteer patient escort, there to help women get into the clinic safely. The event will include a march, protests at family planning clinics, and a reenactment of the murder. Its fun for the whole family. Nothing like showing how pro-life you are by reenacting a murder and celebrating it. Can you imagine what it would be like if the pro-choice movement advocated violence to intimidate Bush funded anti-abortion counciling centers? They’d all be in guantanamo as domestic terrorists.

The latest television commercial for Trojan Condoms is called Evolve.  It depicts a bar with hot women and anthropomorphic male swine.  One of the pigs goes into the restroom, gets a Trojan condom from the vending machine, and comes out looking a whole lot more human, and more attractive to the woman he approaches. The basic message is don’t be a pig, evolve, use condoms, with the tagline, “Use a condom every time.” Seems like sensible advice, but it was way too sexy for Fox and CBS. CBS is the network airing a midseason replacement about swinging, and Fox, is well, Fox. The other networks, being more evolved, ran it without a problem. Ironically, condom commercials are about the only thing you can’t use sex to sell with. On television, standards decree that condom commercials be only about disease prevention, not pregnancy prevention, or even sexual pleasure. Its like doing restaurant commercials where the only feature you can talk about is how their menu helps keep you from keeling over dead from lack of food.

Bush once again vetoed a bill that would increase federal stem cell research. After his veto, Bush said he will not allow human life to be destroyed to save others. He is talking here about embryos that will never be born, regardless of whether they are used for research or not. White House Spokesman Tony Snow later clarified that what the President meant is that he would not sacrifice pre-born human life to be destroyed to save others- the post born, especially in foreign countries we are at war with, are on their own.

Whacko of the Week

Dr. Judith Resiman is in the news again, endorsing last week’s whacko of the month James Holsinger for the position of surgeon general. As you learn a little more about Dr. Judy, you’ll understand that the only benefit of being associated with her is that no matter how insanely lunatic fringe crazy you are, next to her, you seem almost reasonable.

Social conservatives love her. They consider her the leading expert on obscenity in the country, an expert on sex education, and an expert on anything that supports their morbid fear of anything sexual. She’s testified before Congress and consulted for the Justice Department. So, who is she?

I’ll tell you what she’s not- a medical doctor. Her doctorate is in communications. She has no formal scientific training, nor has she done peer reviewed research. Except once. She got money from the federal government to prove a link between Playboy magazine and pedophilia. Her research was so poorly done that the sponsoring university refused to publish it. 

Being neither scientist nor medical doctor, her only qualification is that she can open her mouth and say what she believes. That’s when you fall down the rabbit hole.  She believes that sex education is morally wrong. She believes that the entire field of sexology and sex research is a fraud, and morally wrong. She’s the leading critic of sex research pioneer Alfred Kinsey, equating him to Nazi doctor Josef Mengele. She accusses him of being a child molester, and just about anything else bad she can think of.  She has made a crusade and mini-career out of attacking him and the Kinsey institute, unburdened by the old fashioned tradition of actually providing proof.

Homophobia is not a strong enough term to describe how she feels about gays. Perhaps the term homofearfuloutofherfucking mind is closer. She believes that since they can’t have children, they have to aggressively recruit children. If not stopped, she says, some 30 percent of the population will become gay. She has her own version of Holocaust denial- she claims that gays were not killed by the Nazis, and in fact, the Nazi movement itself was actually a gay conspiracy. That’s why she claims that gay youth support groups are equivalent to Hitler youth.

She accuses Jews of leading the abortion industry, despite being Jewish herself. She’s testified as an expert witness that photographer Robert Mapplethorpe was a "fascist" whose pictures were "not art" because he did not show faces. She compared the book "Harmful to Minors" with "Mein Kampf," admitting she had read neither.

She presents herself as a researcher, although she has no background in science, medicine or research.  She testified before Congress that, "Pornography triggers myriad kinds of internal, natural drugs that mimic the 'high' from a street drug. Addiction to pornography is addiction to what I dub 'erotoxins'--mind-altering drugs produced by the viewer's own brain.” She admits that no scientific research was done to develop her theory. Actual scientists don’t even accept the idea of porn addiction, let alone her notion of it being more powerful than cocaine and making permanent harmful changes to the brain. Her point, though, is to have pornography reclassified as a drug, thus allowing the federal government to control it, and skirt around that pesky first amendment.

Judith Reisman is a pseudoscientific crank of the first order. Her picture should be beside the dictionary definition of erotophobia. The scary part is that Congress and the Justice Department listen to her, and the mainstream media quotes her as an expert. Sure, they want to present all sides of an issue, but quoting Judith Resiman is like getting alternative opinion on economic theory from a homeless wino.
