Happy Mother’s Day. Hope you are enjoying it. This week we do a sexvestigation called Hating the Hate Crimes Bill, which looks at the hate and lies promoted by the people who oppose making brutally murdering someone for being gay a hate crime. It’s Sex Science Sunday, so we bring you all of the latest- including a surprising new cure for hay fever, a simple way to find out if a woman has a lowered libido (and no, the fact that she has no interest in you and won’t sleep with you is not an indicator- nor does that automatically make her a lesbian), and a study on BDSM and relationships that might surprise you, and much more. In our sex and politics section, we try to quit Carrie Prejean, there’s battle of the teen abstinence spokespeople, Osmond news, pedophilia, priests and orthodoxy, and the Supreme Court strikes back at the networks- again.
Politics
In the last two weeks we have made repeated fun of Miss California, Carrie Prejean. I loved writer Michael Rowe’s comment calling her the anti-Susan Boyle. Such ugliness coming out of the mouth of someone so pretty. But enough. We have mocked her and belittled her and I think it is time we stop. We are already getting tired of her and really just wish she would go away. SO this is the last time we are going to mention her. Unless, of course, she does something completely ridiculous, like nude modeling or something.
She did what? You’re kidding. There are pictures of her posing topless? This is significant and ironic for a couple of reasons. Last week in our Sexvestigation about her and her ties to the National Organization for Women, I noted that Miss California still has her crown after ignoring pageant authorities and her commitments to them, and spreading her misinformed hatred against gays. I said that if she had done a nude photo spread with another woman she would be out in a New York minute, referring, of course, to the Vanessa Williams incident. Personally, I think the prohibition against having done any nude modeling or even semi-nude is antiquated and ridiculous. It is basically saying that the young women can not allow themselves to ever have been objectified- that’s the beauty pageant’s job. But in her pageant contract, which she signed, she stated that she had never done any nude or semi-nude modeling. That would be a lie. And grounds for taking her crown away. SO she may lose her crown for reasons I oppose, and not for the reasons I think she should have it yanked away. Of course, Carrie, as always, is playing the victim. It’s just a mean-spirited attack against her because she is a Christian and opposes gay marriage. Not once does she cop to the fact that she is a liar. She wants to take on the responsibility of telling other people they should not be allowed to get married, but she won’t take the responsibility for lying to beauty pageant officials in writing, or ignoring her promises to them. She does say that she is not perfect. Understatement there. She says we should show respect for other people’s opinions and not try to silence them through vicious and mean-spirited attacks. Carrie, you want your opinion to have the force of law. And you are stupid and ignorant, although that’s just my opinion, which I hope you will respect. But it is a fact that you are a liar. And liars and hypocrites get mocked and lose credibility. Welcome to politics. Now go away so I don’t have to make fun of you anymore.
Another person who should not be a spokesperson for anything is Bristol Palin, daughter of failed vice-presidential candidate Sarah Palin. The poorly spoken young woman is now out on a news tour promoting abstinence. I am guessing there was some pressure from mommy to do this to shore up her political position, and to undo the political damage when Bristol called abstinence unrealistic. She is now dubbed the Ambassador of Abstinence. An ambassador that refuses to even talk about birth control. On Good Morning America she said “"Regardless of what I did personally, I just think that abstinence is the only way you can effectively, 100% foolproof way you can prevent pregnancy." Well, of course. And never getting in a car is the only 100% foolproof way to not get injured in a car accident. But never talking about seat belts or claiming that they just don’t work is downright stupid. And Bristol’s ex agrees. Levi Johnston went on CBS’ The Early Show and said “"Abstinence is a great idea, but I also think you need to enforce, you know, condoms and birth control and other things like that to have safe sex. I don't just think telling young kids, you can't have sex, it's not going to work. It's not realistic.” Of course, Levi does not have a politically ambitious mother telling him what to say.
Maine has become the fifth state to legalize gay marriage. The legislature approved it and the governor signed it, even though the governor had previously opposed gay marriage. He said he simply changed his mind as a matter of fairness.
The District of Columbia Council overwhelmingly approved a bill recognizing same-sex marriages performed in other states, by a vote of 12 to 1. The only vote in opposition- Marion Barry- the famous former mayor and crack pipe aficionado. He is an expert on the subject- he’s been married four times. And he might have learned a little about man on man sex during his time in federal prison.
Congress can overule the district, but that would require a full vote in both the House and the Senate, and Obama would have to sign the bill. I just don’t see that happening. But that does not dissuade Utah Mormon Congressman Jason Chaffetz. He vows to fight it to the bitter end. What’s the deal with the Mormons hating the gays? They secretly funded the battle in Hawaii. They were secretly behind much of the Prop 8 funding. They are funding the National Organization for Marriage. These are the same folks who essentially turned a blind eye for years to ex-mormon cults promoting polygamy. You’d think that would be something they’d get steamed over. Instead they go after the gays, and they try to do it under the radar. But here is the weird part about Congressman Chaffetz. His dad is John Haffetz. The John Haffetz who is a gay rights advocate. Maybe Jason should have read his dad’s book, Gay Reality. Looking at his record on the issues, though, I don’t think he reads much.
To be fair, not all Mormons hate gays. Perfect example is Marie Osmond. Her oldest daughter came out as a lesbian this week, and Marie stood behind her. She also came out in support of gays having full civil rights, and the same legal rights that heterosexuals have when it comes to marriage.
While I am happy that Marie has not gone away and she has turned out to be an intelligent and surprisingly progressive woman considering her background, when will Joe the Plumber’s 15 minutes of fame be over? His name isn’t Joe, he is technically not a plumber, and he’s an idiot. SO how the hell did Samuel Werzlebacher wind up becoming a Republican party unofficial spokesman? Christianity Today, in a lengthy interview which I hope they ran in their irrelevant opinions on Christianity section, quotes him saying “I've had some friends that are actually homosexual. And, I mean, they know where I stand, and they know that I wouldn't have them anywhere near my children. But at the same time, they're people, and they're going to do their thing.” Sam, I really, really doubt that these gay people consider you a friend. And personally, I don’t think you should be anywhere near your children. I am so sick of this pseudo-Christian bullshit about hating the sin and loving the sinner. It never really works out that way. You just wind up hating.
You like having sex with young children. You want to work within an environment where you have lots of exposure to children but enough power and authority so that it is less likely you’ll wind up in jail. You need an environment that has a healthy disrespect for women, and forbids them from having leadership positions. That’s because of women’s nasty tendency to want to protect children over protecting men in authority. This environment also explains your own avoidance of women and disdain for them without bringing up a lot of uncomfortable questions. And until the Catholic church lost over 2 billion dollars in lawsuits, it was the perfect place to be. But now the Catholic church is no longer a safe haven. Where can you turn?
How about orthodox Judaism? It offers positions of powerful religious authority. It keeps women out of positions of power. In fact, it seems to share a number of elements with the Catholic church. And not surprisingly, it is turning out that they have their own brewing child sex scandal. A Jewish religious school in Brooklyn is now under fire for tactics almost identical to the Catholic church. Cover-up and facilitation. When parents reported to Rabbi Avrohom Reichman that an older boy was abusing their young son, the Rabbi interpreted it to mean that the son was a new potential victim for him. So he began sexually abusing him. It went on for months, until his parents removed him from the school. Joel Englman, now 23, began meeting other young men a couple of years ago who had a similar experience with the Rabbi. He decided to do something about it. He went to the religious school, and was told not to go to the police, they would take care of it, they had dealt with this before, and they would remove Reichman. They did remove him, for a few months, waiting only until the statute of limitations passed before fully reinstating him. Reichman is still in the classroom, and Joel is now suing the school. I hope he winds up owning it and gets to personally fire Reichman.
This case has opened the floodgates for other cases to start coming forward across the country. It appears that child molestation is a huge problem in the orthodox community, and now that people are starting to come forward, they years of silence may be ending. . It is not about the Jewish community, or the Catholic community, though. It is about how certain male dominated religions with negative attitudes about women create an environment that becomes attractive to child molesters. These authoritarian environments are especially attractive because they protect those in authority. Until they start to change some of their fundamental thinking, they will continue to be breeding grounds for abuse.
On the other side of things, popular and powerful Miami priest Father Alberto Cutie (Coo-tee-ay) is in trouble for acting normally. His audience for his Spanish language talk show was 24 million. That is all over now. He was caught hugging and kissing a woman on a Miami beach. Pictures were obtained by the Miami Herald. The church was shocked and outraged- stripped him of his parish and radio show and sent him away. It seems like their reaction to this was much swifter and much more shocked than if it had just been a little boy. Catholic League president Bill Donohue said in an interview that he just had a problem dealing with the opposite sex. No, Bill, he actually knew what to do with an adult member of the opposite sex. Its most of the other priests who have a problem dealing with the opposite sex. They don’t seem to like them very much, and too many of them prefer children. The purpose of celibacy in the church was originally designed to make sure the priest’s assets wound up with the church and not with his wife. It has lead to endless misery and encouraged people with deep and serious problems to be attracted to the church, and shut out many good and healthy people. Until the church changes their celibacy stance, they will continue to fester with a leadership that is simply unhealthy.
And finally, as if it were not enough that the networks are marching themselves into irrelevance by basically changing their schedules to daytime tv with talk shows, game shows, and so-called reality shows, the Supreme Court is jumping in to to help them. Last week they ruled in favor of the FCC and fines for excited utterances. This week they overturned the ruling from the lower court that threw out the $550,000 fine against CBS for the Janet Jackson nipple exposure. Now the lower court has to relook at it. So arbitrary standards and fear will rule for network television. They don’t know what can cost them an indecency fine, since the FCC has never spelled it out until after the fact. If it weren’t for Lost and maybe one or two other shows, and the fact that my parents are too cheap to pay for cable and would lose their free entertainment, I would not miss the Networks. The real innovation is on cable networks like USA. Now, if USA would just add more nudity…
Sexvestigation Hating the Hate Crimes Bill
When specific people are targeted for murder and violence because of who they are, that is a form of terrorism. It is designed to instill fear in those communities. Jews, blacks, gays, whoever- it is a different type of crime. It affects far more people than just the victim.
Gay haters, though, are incensed by the notion that gays should be included in hate crimes legislation. The real reason is that they believe that gays bring it on themselves. If they weren’t gay, they wouldn’t be attacked. They could just choose to be something else- and problem solved.
These gay haters spoke out in force in the House as they debated the Mathew Shepard Hate Crimes bill- which passed this past week. Those opposing it gave us a dank dark look into their dirty little souls.
A specifically notorious example was North Carolina’s Congressional Representative Virginia Fox. During the debate, this is what she said on the floor: "The bill was named after a very unfortunate incident that happened, where a young man was killed, but we know that that young man was killed in the commitment of robbery. It wasn't because he was gay. The bill was named for him, the hate crimes bill was named for him, but it's, it's really a hoax, that that continues to be used as an excuse for passing these bills." She said this with Mathew Shepard’s mother sitting in the gallery. And she lied.
Let’s review what she calls an unfortunate incident. Mathew Shepard was kidnapped, brutally beaten, and left chained to a fence to die. Yeah, I guess you’d call that unfortunate.
The murderers confessed that they targeted Mathew Shepard because he was gay. The brutality of the murder was because he was gay. He was robbed because they planned to murder him anyway. And they murdered him because he was gay.
Now, it is clear that Virginia Fox does not like gays. She does not believe that it is a particularly heinous crime to specifically target them for violence. And yes, Virginia, there is a hate crime when you target gay people, no matter how much you think they deserve to be targeted.
But sadly, she was not alone in spilling her hate filled misinformation. For the Hate Crimes bill, the House was filled with hate. REP. GRESHMAN BARRET (R-SC) said: This bill would inhibit religious freedom in our society — a scary thought. Gresh, I know this is based on the false premise that the bill would somehow make speaking out against homosexuals a hate crime- which was the opponent’s of this bills rallying cry to get the fundamentalist churches behind them even if it was not even remotely true. In fact, the law specifically stipulates that “evidence of expression or associations of the defendant may not be introduced as substantive evidence at trial, unless the evidence specifically relates to that offense.” You’d have to be a lot more specific- like telling people to go out and kill homosexuals and one of your idiot followers does. Then it would be a hate crime. Or maybe you don’t think that is a hate crime either- a scary thought. REP. LOUIE GOHMERT (R-TX) said: You think a pregnant mother does not deserve the protection of a homosexual? You think a military member doesn’t deserve the protection of a transvestite? Lou, I am completely unaware of anyone specifically targeting either soldiers or pregnant women as a group in order to terrorize them and send them into hiding. If that day comes, I will be in favor of adding protections for pregnant mothers and I will enjoy these morons getting their asses soundly kicked by the military members they target. House Majority Leader John Boehner (R-OH) told The Washington Times that the hate-crimes bill makes him "want to throw up," and noted that it doesn't make sense to prosecute "what we think [criminals] were thinking as opposed to what they did." I know that having a law degree is not required for a House seat, or even a leadership position, but John, you should at least know a little bit about American jurisprudence. If you kill someone on a whim, its called 2nd degree murder or manslaughter. If you plan the crime out ahead of time, especially when it is done for profit, you’ll probably be charged with first degree murder. Your intentions and what you think about before committing the crime are absolutely a part of how you are charged. You might even avoid prison if it can be proved that you were unable to understand the wrongness of your actions due to mental defect. Intent is important- for example- did you intend to lie about this bill to court your fundamentalist constituents or are you really this ill-informed? It makes a difference. Not sure which is worse, though. Both make me want to throw up. REP MICHELE BACHMANN (R-MN) said: I feel that this hate crime legislation could be considered the very definition of tyranny. Well, Michelle, as the woman who made it as the official dictionary definition of a loon, you should know something about definitions. And you told this whopper of a lie- “Apparently, people who are practicing pedophiles would be protected under this legislation.” Where the hell did that come from? Well, notorious homophobe Steve King tried to introduce an amendment that would specifically state that pedophiles were not protected by this bill. Since the bill already specifically defines sexual orientation as involving sex between consenting adults, not only did this make no sense, but it actually was introduced to link homosexuality with pedophilia- which is not true since the vast majority of child molesters identify as heterosexual no matter how you crunch the statistics. The King amendment was soundly rejected for the bit of gay baiting it was, but that did not stop Bachman, King, and Fox News from falsely claiming that House Democrats voted to "protect" or "defend" pedophiles. In fact, Fox ran the headline “House Democrats defend pedophiles but not veterans”. How many IQ points do you lose watching Fox news? Its not Hulu that’s the alien plot to turn our minds to mush- Its Fox News. Ever notice how alien Ruport Murdoch looks when he flicks out that long forked tongue and wraps it around his unwilling prey? And there is no way that Bill O’Reilly and Sean Hannity are really human. It’s so easy to imagine them peeling off their human suits when they get home. The hate fueled drivel peddled on the House floor was not true- but when people are this consumed by hate, why should it be any surprise that they are also liars?
Sex Science Sunday It is the second Sunday of the month, which makes it Sex Science Sunday, where we look at the recent scientific research into sexuality. Allergy season is kicking in. Excuse me. Let me just take something for it. Ahh that’s better. He was right. Masturbation does help allergies. I am talking about Sina Zarrintan, a neurologist from the Tabriz Medical University. He explains how masturbation can help allergies- the nose and the genitals are both connected to the same part of the nervous system that controls certain reflexes – the sympathetic nervous system. A blocked nose is caused by swollen and inflamed nasal blood vessels, irritated by an infection or pollen in the air. During orgasm, the sympathetic nervous system constricts blood vessels across the body. That should soothe the swollen nasal blood vessels, freeing the airway for normal breathing. Relief never felt so good.
Its called oxytocin. It’s the hormone that helps bond women with their newborn children. And it might just make the best perfume ever if you could figure out how to make it inhalable. A new study from the University of Bristol shows that after men and women got a dose of oxytocin, they rated strangers as more attractive. It even helps people better remember faces. Oxytocin is also naturally produced during sex, which plays a role in the bonding process. There have been three arguments against making emergency contraceptive Plan B available to women under 18. One is that the effects on younger women are not fully understood. That is a complete falsehood. Two is that if they are having sex the bitches deserve to get pregnant. That’s the misogynist crap from people like CNN anchor Mike Galanos, who wrote “"We are making it available to high school girls. We're enabling teenagers to act carelessly with an easy way out". Yeah- they should have to take the hard way out- forced to carry and give birth to an unwanted child. That’ll teach ‘em. The third is that they won’t be able to understand the instructions and printed information. That has been disproven by a study by NYU professor Dr. Miriam Cremer, who found that young women aged 12 to 17 can understand how to use emergency contraception as well as adults. The study was based on having young women read the label and then answer a simple survey. What a surprise. Young women are not the complete idiots the far right makes them out to be. They can make decisions, understand words, and realize that if they have sex they don’t want to get pregnant. In a study published last month in The Journal of Sexual Medicine, 263 women were recruited throughout the United States. These women took the simple decreased sexual desire screening test, and their answers were then reviewed with a clinician who was not an expert in female sexual desire. At the same time, an expert in female sexual dysfunction conducted a standard diagnostic interview with the study participant. The results were that the decreased sexual desire screening tool and standard diagnostic interview were in agreement in 85.2 percent of all the cases. SO it turns out that this very simple test may be a very effective tool for doctors not specifically trained in diagnosing decreased sexual desire. And no, it is not appropriate to bring the test along on a first date. People used to believe that masturbation could make you go blind. Then it was ED drugs. Turns out neither is true. According to a new study commissioned by Eli Lilly: Treatments for erectile dysfunction such as the hugely popular drug Viagra do not appear to pose long-term damage to men's sight. Next they will be studying the possible link between Cialis and hairy palms. NIU associate psychology professor Brad Sagarin has completed a new study on BDSM which was published in Archives of Sexual Behavior. According to Sagarin, “It’s a relatively understudied area of human sexuality. It’s something that a lot of people incorporate into fantasies, but it’s not something we actually know a lot about. Literature written by experienced SM practitioners suggests that, within the context of an SM scene, [dominance, submission, pain and humiliation] can enhance a relationship rather than damaging it.” SO he decided to find out if that was true. He and his team went to SM parties to collect data, which included measuring cortisol and testosterone levels and using psychological measurements of closeness. His conclusion? In an environment of mutual consent, SM experiences “have the potential to increase intimacy.” A study from Lucile Packard Children's Hospital and the Stanford University School of Medicine shows that health websites that have sexual health information for teens are often "riddled with errors and omissions." Sophia Yen, MD, lead researcher said, "Even widely trusted sites like WebMD are not that accurate when it comes to adolescent reproductive health...Teens should be cautious about finding sexual health answers on the Web." SO they get misinformation in abstinence only classes in school, and misinformation on the Web. Kids are just screwed. Omissions are a problem, since half failed to provide information on emergency contraception- something important to know about. They d find some good sites for teens though. They include Go Ask Alice, the Center for Young Women's Health, TeensHealth, and Planned Parenthood's Teen Wire. Finally, here is the latest sex research I am very skeptical about. It comes from Susan Fiske, a psychologist at Princeton University. The conclusion is that men are more likely to think of women as objects if they have looked at sexy pictures of females beforehand. They showed men pictures of women in bikinis, and it lit up the same part of the brain that lights up when men think about using power tools. First of all, looking at sexy women does make men think about using their own personal powertool- no surprise there. We still have very limited understanding of what it really means when different parts of the brain light up. Scans of some of the men found that a part of the brain associated with empathy for other people's emotions and wishes shut down after looking at the pictures. Maybe that means they are objectifying the photos, but to extrapolate that to say that men will then see real women as impersonal objects is a real leap. Did they do a brain scan of the man right after meeting the real woman? I think our brains know there is a difference between a picture and a real person, and may react differently. This study seems more agenda driven than scientific.
