Political News

The big political story is about the New York Times feature on John McCain, essentially accusing the man who criticizes the power of lobbyists of being in bed with lobbyists. Well, not physically in bed, but only because technically they can’t prove it. But its possible. McCain has admitted to multiple affairs, and the story reveals that in his 2000 run for the presidency he was getting uncomfortably cozy with lobbyist Vicki Iseman- so cozy that many of his staff assumed they were having an affair and there was an intervention where they apparently had to tell him to break off the relationship because it looked bad. That she appears with him at countless events is documented on video, but McCain denies that his staff gave him tough love and he denies that the relationship was romantic. I suppose it could have been just about sex. Unfortunately, the unprovable sexual aspect of the story overshadows what appears to be a more important story of apparently doing a lobbyists bidding, a lobbyist that provided him with a lot of cash besides any other possible incentives. Why would you spend so much time with a lobbyist when you supposedly don’t like lobbyists? Sure, she’s attractive- in fact, she looks almost exactly like his current wife. But McCain’s problem goes deeper- virtually every one of his closest advisors are part of the Washingon lobbyist crowd. Some are still even being paid as lobbyists while working for McCain. That is the important story, not whether he fucked one of them, but whether his surprisingly cozy relationship induced him to focus on her needs and not those of his constituents.

Speaking of affairs and sleazy, tonight is the broadcast of the important 60 Minutes show about former Alabama governor Don Siegelman. Since you may be listening to this show later, you can probably catch it on a cbsnews.com video podcast. The story is a stunning one- interference by the Justice Department to put a Democratic governor in jail using a corrupt judge and questionable tactics. It is one of the most shocking stories to come out of the Justice Department scandal. And of course, there is a sex angle. To put icing on the cake of destroying a political enemy, GOP political operative Jill Simpson alleges that Karl Rove personally told her to find evidence that Siegelman was cheating on his wife. For the family values party, its no fun just to put a political opponent in jail on questionable charges- you have to destroy their marriage as well.

Anti-abortion groups are pretty much all about wanting women to get pregnant whether they want to or not. The claim about wanting to protect babies is basically bullshit, since they oppose almost anything that might lead to avoiding unwanted pregnancies. Oh, except for not having sex.  But then again, they are not stupid enough to believe that that actually works- people are going to have sex.  In the latest, a Mishiwaka Indiana Planned Parenthood clinic announced a plan to pass out free packets of emergency contraceptives. They are what you take after having unplanned sex to avoid having an unplanned pregnancy. In any rational world, the anti-abortion people should be all for this, but of course, nooooo. Indiana Right to Life executive director and all man Mike Fichter called Planned Parenthood's plans "irresponsible" and claimed that there's little evidence that emergency contraception has any significant impact on abortion or unintended pregnancy rates. Which would be true- if it didn’t work at all. But it does. Fichter also falsely claimed that it was a form of abortion- but keep in mind that these nimrods think that most contraceptive methods are a form of abortion. And of course, he falls back on the argument that the non-profit Planned Parenthood is some sort of greedy corporation looking to expand its customer base in the name of profits. In a fair and rational world, Mike Fichter would have an unwanted pregnancy right now, and he wouldn’t be talking to the press, he’d be in the Planned Parenthood waiting room.

And in more anti-abortion nonsense- Legislation proposed in Missouri would classify emergency contraception as an "abortion-inducing medication." That is not medically true, but in Missouri, science is just a tool of the devil. The bill would also protect pharmacies from punishment and lawsuits for refusing to sell or fill a prescription for any drug defined as triggering an abortion. The bill is so poorly worded that pharmacies might also be allowed to refuse to provide contraceptive rings, IUDs and even birth control pills. If passed, Missouri would join Mississippi in protecting pharmacies and not just pharmacists from having to provide women with birth control options. Many states already allow individual pharmacists to opt out of filling prescriptions they find objectionable. What they should be doing is finding a different job.

Thirty eight women have come forward to Jamie Leigh Jones to share their experiences of being raped and sexually harassed while working for Halliburton and other contractors in Iraq. But they can’t publicly come forward, because the binding arbitration contracts in their employment agreements effectively silences them. Jamie Leigh Jones was the woman brutally raped in Iraq 2005 by her Halliburton co-workers, held captive by Halliburton and had to be rescued by the U.S. Embassy, and despite Congressional hearings and numerous news stories- not a single person has been indicted or punished for that well-documented crime. Legal experts believe that the system is so rigged that Jamie Leigh Jones and her attackers will never get justice. Ever. Congress is taking some action. The International Violence Against Women Act, was introduced in the Senate by Senators Joseph R. Biden Jr. and Richard G. Lugar, would require training for contractors overseas in combating violence against women and would improve the reporting and complaint processes for these crimes, which are essentially now non-existent. Congress also needs to amend the law that basically gives contractors a get out of jail free card for rape and murder. And binding arbitration needs to be removed from consideration for rape or any other crime committed against an employee with the complicity of the employer. The problem of sexual assault and harassment in Iraq in enormous, and we are only now getting a handle on it because it is a problem that no one is tracking; the contractors and the Justice Department have turned a blind eye to it. The Pentagon refuses to provide Senator Bill Nelson with statistics on such things as the number of medical rape examinations on contract employees by military doctors.  The Bush administration has refused to address the issue. And our only hope is for a new administration. A president really can make a difference.

Speaking of the President, he has been away in Africa this week, touting all he has done for them. And as seems to be the pattern when he promotes one of his initiatives, that means it is due for a funding cut or elimination. The White House has been heavily promoting all he has done to fight AIDS in Africa, and they even pointed out how Bush was seeking an increase of $200 million over last year’s request for the Global Fund to Fight AIDs.  It is true that he is asking for more money than he did last year for the Global Fund, but last year Congress approved far more than what he asked for, and if they approve the amount he requested this year, it will actually be a cut of 341 million dollars. When a reporter mentioned this, the response was that the Global Fund currently has too much money, and “you don’t want to pile up money”. Unless you are an oil company, with record profits, or any of the Bush cronies who seem to be piling up money like crazy.

Entertainment News

The big news is that the war is finally over. And I’m talking about the hi-def war between Toshiba and Microsoft supported HD-DVD and the winner, Sony’s Blu-Ray. This last week, Toshiba officially gave up, and will cease production of HD-DVD players. If you already purchased an HD-DVD player or a combo-player, you should be able to buy HD-DVD’s at firesale prices. Unfortunately, there is not a whole lot of HD-DVD content, and if you are looking for cheap high-def porn, your options are limited. Initially, porn studios embraced HD-DVD, but over the last year they have been moving away from it. Digital Playground announced in January it would abandon HD-DVD, and Vivid announced that they were jumping to Blu-ray. I mean, doesn’t it make sense to have blue movies in the Blu-ray format? So with porn abandoning them, followed by Walmart and Netflix, HD-DVD was pretty much doomed. SO, who still has HD-DVD titles?  Third Degree has Big Boob Orgy, Digital Playground had major titles in Island Fever 3 and 4, and the huge hit Pirates for a total of about 20 titles before dumping the format. Wicked had out about a half dozen titles. Hustler had out only two titles, including Jenna Haze Oil Orgy.

Just how bad are English women at sex? According to a survey by British electronic retailer Comet, 47 percent of English men said that they would give up sex for six months for a 50 inch plasma tv. I’m wondering if this also includes giving up watching porn on the plasma tv. I love my big screen tv, but I would not give up sex for it. Well, not for six months. Maybe a week. A month, maybe- no, no just a week.

Do you remember Clean Flicks? They were the Colorado based company that sanitized films by taking out naughty language and sex scenes, so pissing off the original directors of the films that they sued them and they lost. This set a precendent that killed our idea for DirtyFlicks, which would put sex scenes into movies that did not have them. This did not put small purveyors such as former Clean Flicks dealer Daniel D. Thompson immediately out of business. While he no longer had CleanFlicks to sell, he made his own edited versions and ran his Orem Utah store under the name Flix Club, until December when Hollywood attorneys forced him to shut down that part of his business. Daniel apparently found another use for the back room of his store.  Would you believe making porn films with underage girls? Thompson was arrested for paying $20 each to get blowjobs from two fourteen year old girls. The he told them that is sanitizing business was a front for making porn films, and offered to film them. They turned down the offer, but $20 for a blow job? And apparently no tip, as the whole thing was revealed when the girl’s mother found the $20 in her pocket. Let’s see- statutory rapist, underage prostitution, hypocrite, and really cheap bastard. And was he planning on sanitizing the mountains of porn police found in the Flix Club back room? So, he’d offer for rent Debbie Doesn’t Do Dallas? Tickle a censor and a pervert giggles creepily.

If you are in New York next week, you might want to check out the alternative film festival CineKink, which offers films such as AfroDite Superstar, porn classic Barbara Broadcast, The Bi Apple, The Bondage Boob Tube, and underwater sex film The Big Blue. The festival runs February 26th through March 2nd.

Book22.com, named after the Song of Solomon text in the Bible, is a Christian oriented sex toy site, run by Joy Wilson. It steers clear of sex activities that she considers unholy, which makes me wonder, what butt plug would Jesus buy? Apparently none, as there are no toys for anal stimulation on the site, and penis shaped dildos or vibrators are in short supply. Think mostly vibrating bullets, jelly rings and massage oils. G-spot stimulation seems to be okay with the Lord, though. The site’s sparse collection even includes lubes and condoms, so I guess this is progress for the conservative Christian community.

And in Who is getting naked now, its Lindsey Lohan, recreating Marilyn Monroe’s last nude photoshoot known as the Last Sitting for New York Magazine. And yes, inside she gets surprisingly naked. It is on their site, and looks more like Playboy than New York magazine. In a huge boost for their circulation, Morality in Media sexaphobe and president Robert Peters, said “"I thankfully cannot claim to have examined every 'mainstream' magazine that has published nude photographs of women, but of the one's I have seen, New York Magazine's effort to are create Marilyn Monroe's legendary last (nude) photo shoot' pushes the envelope further than them all.” He calls it softcore porn, a term he uses for any female nudity.  I hope they printed a lot of this issue.

And in the is he or isn’t he category, apparently, it really is Kiss musician Gene Simmons in the sex video on the GenesSecret.com site. AT first they denied it was him, but now his lawyer admits it and has delivered a cease and desists letter to the site. The real question is whether people will pay $20 to see the current version of Simmons having sex. They bill it as the sex tape Gene Simmons doesn’t want you to see, but I’m kinda thinking it is the sex tape that none of us want to see.
