Political News

Just in time for Valentine’s day, dildos and other sex toys are now legal in Texas. A  federal appeals court voted by 2 to 1 to strike down a Texas law that makes it a crime to promote or sell sex toys. Under Texas law, it was a crime to even give or lend sex toys to someone else, or to promote their use even by providing educational information. Justice Thomas M. Reavley of the 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in New Orleans "Whatever one might think or believe about the use of these devices government interference with their personal and private use violates the Constitution." That leaves Mississippi and Alabama, but with Mississippi in the 5th circuit, their sex toy ban is probably out as well. Laws in Louisiana, Kansas, Colorado and Georgia have been thrown out by courts in recent years. As was the case in battling the government during the Reagan years, adult mail order company Adam and Eve also joined in this successful battle, along with the Dreamers stores and Le Rouge Boutique in Austin. The case is important also because Texas argued that the famous Supreme Court Lawrence v. Texas decision that struck down laws prohibiting consensual gay sex did not apply. That decision was based on a broad constitutional right to privacy, but Texas argued that it was Irrelevant because that dealt with private activity while this dealt with a commercial product.  The circuit court disagreed. Texas also argues that they had a right to discourage prurient interests in autonomous sex and the pursuit of sexual gratification unrelated to procreation. Again the court disagreed. The state of Texas can still appeal, as it did in Lawrence v. Texas, all the way up to the Supreme Court. And that has the potential of invalidating anti-sex toy laws for the whole country. The wild card is that it is a much more conservative court thanks to Bush appointees than it was when Lawrence v. Texas was decided.

And our crap journalism of the week award goes to the Washington Post, for Emil Steiner’s online column about the sex toy case. The column includes a picture of a man in a gun store with an assault rifle with the caption, “Should buying sex toys be as easy as buying guns?” In the typical journalism tactic of providing balance by quoting the crazy people on the other side of an issue, he writes “The defenders of those laws say it would be dangerous to make sex toys more easily accessible. They note that sexual addiction is a recognized mental disorder, and they worry that sex toys may encourage that.” No, sexual addiction is not a recognized sexual disorder, at least not by the medical community. And no, there are no studies anywhere that link sex toys to dangerous behavoiur or as triggers of compulsive behavoiur. We do know that they are great ways to help pre-orgasmic women learn how to become orgasmic. And the day someone successfully robs a bank by  “Give me all of your money- I’ve got a dildo and I’m not afraid to use it”, then maybe we could compare gun sales with dildo sales. Deaths and injuries caused by guns each year in the United States- 100,000. Dildo deaths and injuries- 0. Maybe minor chafing if you don’t use lube.

In Canton Ohio, if you are a woman, you might want to think twice about calling police for help. Hope Steffy found that out the hard way. Hope had been assaulted, and her cousin called 911. When officers arrived, she accidentally handed them the driver’s license of her dead sister, which she kept as a reminder. The deputy refused to give it back when she realized her mistake, reportedly telling her to “shut up about your dead sister”. She did not shut up, so the deputy, according to witnesses, slammed her into his cruiser, cracking one of her teeth, and later slammed her into the ground, causing cuts and bruises. It is alleged, as we can’t see it, because for some reason, the patrol car’s dashcam was not turned on. It is supposed to be. Then they arrested her for disorderly conduct, took her to jail, and then seven officers, both men and women, stripped off her clothes while she begged, cried and screamed as she lay handcuffed face down on the cold jail cell floor. Then they left her completely naked in the cell for six hours. She covered herself with toilet paper. Even though she was the victim, and sustained injuries, including a cracked tooth, a bulging disc, and bruises, they denied her medical attention or even access to a phone or an attorney. Stark County Sheriff Swanson denies that they did anything wrong- it was all done for her protection. His problem is that there is video of the stripping- shocking and disturbing video. Other video that should exist is apparently missing. It looked more like something you’d expect to see leaked out of Iraq, and watching it, you clearly see that rape is not about sex or penetration, but about power and humiliation. If this is all legal, their jails are no better than Abu Ghraib. And justice and decency just as illusive. She is now suing, and hers is not the only lawsuit. Three girls aged 14, 15, and 16 were strip searched even though they were not under arrest, and they claim that disparaging remarks were made about them while naked. All this over a threatened charge of criminal trespass on a public sidewalk. Footage of that assault has apparently been destroyed. The Attorney General is now investigating. I hope that all of those involved in brutally pulling off Hope Steffy’s clothes and assaulting her all lose their shirts.

In Virginia, notorious for its anti-sex laws, the word obscenity follows the Alice in Wonderland view of defining words- it can mean whatever they want them to. In this case,  local police went after pictures in an Abercrombie and Fiitch display window. What did they find obscene? The side view of a topless woman with her arm almost completely covering her breasts, and pictures of young men from the rear, one of whom is wearing the jeans low enough so that you can see just the top of the butt crack- slightly less than the view afforded by your average plumber. Abercrombie and Fitch was warned to take down the photos, and when they did not, police raided the store and confiscated them. Prosecutors dropped the obscenity charges when they realized that they had no prosecutable case. Abercrombie and Fitch will continue to pursue legal remedies, and hopefully find a way to thank these numbskulls for millions of dollars in free publicity.

Pete Ashdown set up the largest wireless free network in Utah. But if a new bill by Representative Brad Daw passes, he’ll have to shut it down. In fact, all free wireless networks would have to shut down. The bill requires that all public wireless networks  restrict access to minors, or be held liable for damages if minors access pornographic material. Of course, there is no definition of pornographic, so that can be almost anything. And Daws doesn’t seem worried about minors accessing other potentially harmful material, such as how to make a bomb. In the world of the anti-sex crowd, the only thing harmful on the Internet is sex. Forget about racist sites, forget about sites advocating violence, forget about the mountains of misinformation. The bill would require that anyone accessing a wireless network would have to use a credit card. And we know, no kids have access to credit cards. Personally, I don’t think the Internet is for kids. I have no problem with banning them entirely, setting up a sandboxed kidnet, making it a crime for anyone under 18 to access the Internet. I’m fine with that, because there is a lot more on the net than just sex that is inappropriate for kids. But leave adults and the free exchange of ideas alone. A world made completely kid friendly is a world where adults are forced to live as children.

What is a pharmacist’s job? Increasingly, it is becoming a moral arbiter, deciding which doctor prescribed medications they think are moral for you to use. In South Dakota, the legislature just rejected a bill that would have mandated that pharmacists dispense birth control. Current state law allows them to opt out, which can be a problem in a small town with only one pharmacy and a religious extremist behind the counter. This is a growing problem across the nation.

Is Comcast your Internet provider? Better watch what you do. Their new terms of service prohibit you from posting, storing, sending, transmitting, or disseminating any information or material which a reasonable person could deem to be indecent. Whatever that may be. I’d say that a reasonable person would not want Comcast to determine what they can post or read.

Entertainment News

Hey Abbott- where’s my porn? According to FBI documents released by the Freedom of Information Act, Abbott and Costello were two of the biggest porn collectors in show biz. An FBI informant remarked that Costello ‘had it running out of his ears.’”, which is not really the best way to enjoy it.  Somehow the FBI knew that Bud Abbott’s porn collection included 1500 reels of pornographic motion pictures. How accurate all of this information is remains to be seen. Fortunately, with the government collecting copies of every email and phone call, we can look forward to far more accurate information in our personal files.

What is the dictionary term for new naughty words? Those looking in the latest version of the Oxford English dictionary can find some new ones- “boink,” “cock-block,” “cooch,” “cooze,” “pube,” “put out,” “starfucker,” “tonsil hockey,” and “ya-yas.” Now, come up with a sentence using all of them.

Let’s compare and contrast. In the U.S., we lost our minds because Janet Jackson lost her top. In Brazil, when a woman’s already very brief costume fell off during Rio’s carnival parade, leaving her completely naked except for a headdress, the float lost half a point in the judging. Exposed breasts are perfectly fine.

Let’s do another compare and contrast. Ang Lee’s Lust Caution was just released in China because he had to make a special version for them with seven minutes of sex cut out. That means that in China they don’t get to see the same version the rest of the world gets to see in what is essentially a Chinese movie. Compare that to the United States. Thanks to the MPAA, we get to see specially edited for the U.S. versions in theatres, while the rest of the world gets to see the uncut version. There’s a compare, there’s just no contrast.

In the Czech Republic, cash strapped young men can go to prostitutes for free, as long as they allow the session to appear on the Internet. At the Big Sister virtual brothel, about a dozen customers per night appear on camera in one of the many theme rooms, while online viewers pay roughly $45 a month to watch. This has to suck for the already underpaid male pornstars. Now they are competing with guys giving it away for free. Which, ironically, has been a problem for female prostitutes, who compete with women giving it away for free. Now there are youtube-like porn sites encouraging both men and women to give it away for free. It is getting harder and harder to make a buck in the sex biz.

I really like Matt Damon, and I enjoy Sarah Silverman in small doses, but together they make magic in the video you can see on youtube, with Damon singing and dancing. The video was shown on the Jimmy Kimmel show, Kimmel being Silverman’s current boyfriend. The music video is titled I’m fucking Matt Damon. Its well worth checking out. A response by Kimmell is apparently in the works, called “I’m fucking Ben Affleck.”

Shane’s World debuts the Porn Week line, from PornWeek.com, which features actual vacations that include porn stars. The first is called Budapest party, showing far more than the U.K. Bravo series about Porn Week, which showed far more than U.S. cable channels would allow which is why the show did not air here. For those who can’t make it to one of these vacations, they can now enjoy them in the privacy of their own home. Sunscreen not included.

A four disc eight hour release from veteran adult performer Jack Lawrence includes just six sex scenes. Its called Breaking into Porn, and it provides information to potential male porn stars on how to break into the business. Two of the scenes are instructional, with Lawrence demonstrating anal techniques, positioning and how to open up for the camera. The covered topics include moving to and living in “Porn Valley,” finding an agent, terminology, professionalism, what to expect, scene rates and how to charm female performers.

Speaking of charming female performers, I think adult male performer and director Tee Reel definitely considers that part of his job description, And he seems to really enjoy it. His latest directorial effort is from Sex Z Pictures and his called Get Reel. Gonzo performer Ryder Skye debuts in her first feature as Tee’s girlfriend in a plot driven feature.

With Jenna Jameson retiring from performing and pissing everyone off in her retirement speech at the AVN awards, her ClubJenna losing its contract girls and turning out only five movies last year, that makes the Tera Patrick the current top It girl in the porn industry. Her latest is Return to Teradise Island, a sequel to the hugely successful Teradise Island that topped the charts for over a year. Shot on Maui, Tera joins Brittany Skye on the beach, and also in the movie are Nikki Benz, Lucy Lee and Alexis Amore, enjoying the beauty of Hawaii and sex in the great outdoors.

Whacko of the Week Revisited

Now that John McCain has cinched up the Republican nomination, it seems appropriate to take a second look and renominate him as a whacko of the week.

We do have to differentiate, as there is more than one John McCain. There is the feisty and often moderate maverick we remember from years ago, and then there is the current John McCain, who is very far to the right of the old John McCain. It is the current John McCain that concerns us most, since, unfortunately, that is the one running for president.

This is the McCain who last week faced a vote that would outlaw torture. The old McCain came out strongly against torture. This McCain vited against a torture ban. This is the McCain who praises Karl Rove and says he would seek his advice, who sings bomb bomb bomb Iran, who skips important votes on renewable energy, and supports limiting the right of habeas corpus.

On sexual issues, though, the old McCain and the new McCain are not that different.

McCain is and has been decidedly anti-freedom- freedom for gays, freedom of speech, freedom of marriage, freedom of choice, and freedom from imposed religion. In his anti-Romney robocall during the Florida primary, it stated "We care deeply about traditional values and protecting families. And we need someone who will not waver in the White House: Ending abortion, preserving the sanctity of marriage, stopping the trash on the airwaves and attempts to ban God from every corner of society. These issues are core to our being.”  Let’s look at his specific stances on each of these issues.

When it comes to a woman’s right to choose, McCain clearly says no. He scores a zero from both Planned Parenthood and NARAL on choice issues. At this year's March for Life, he said "If I am fortunate enough to be elected as the next President of the United States, I pledge to you to be a loyal and unswerving friend of the right to life movement." According to NARAL, McCain "has never cosponsored or supported legislation that would prevent unintended pregnancy or reduce the need for abortion." So he shares the barefoot and pregnant credo that was common in his late teens and twenties in the 1950’s. His seven children, two adopted, make it clear what he thinks a woman’s job is. His current wife Cindy, after three births and multiple miscarriages led to spinal problems, wound up stealing painkillers from the medical charity she founded.

He supported the Unborn Victims of Violence Act, a law that grants separate legal status to an embryo or fetus. He co-sponsored a federal abortion ban. He voted to permit federally funded Title X family-planning clinics to decline to counsel women on abortion services, and to deny women in military service the right to abortion services at overseas military hospitals even with their own money to pay for it. He voted against the Freedom of Access to Clinic Entrances Act. He voted for both the Global Gag Rule and the domestic gag rule that limits the information that family planning clinics receiving federal funds can provide.

On birth control, he is just as bad. He voted to terminate the Title X family-planning program. He terminates birth control while being against terminating an unwanted pregnancy. He voted to impose a federal parental-consent law on teens seeking birth control. He voted against legislation that would have required insurance coverage of prescription birth control, improved access to emergency contraception, and provided more women with prenatal health care. He voted against funding teen pregnancy prevention programs. He voted to defund the United Nations Population Fund.

McCain opposes sex education, accept when it is abstinence only. Keeping women ignorant, barefoot, and pregnant seems to be his primary goal. In fact, he does not seem to like women much at all. While campaigning, a woman in the audience called Hillary Clinton a bitch, and McCain just laughed. And it might explain this little joke from McCain from years past- "Why is Chelsea Clinton so ugly? Because her father is Janet Reno." McCain could well take the title Mr. Mysogynist.

On to gay rights. How keeping gay people from getting married preserves the sanctity of marriage, with its high rate of divorce, including McCain’s from his first wife Carol after his many extramarital affairs and after Carol was crippled in a car accident, baffles anyone with the tiniest ability to think logically. McCain supported the Arizona constitutional amendment to ban gay marriage- but that amendment went further. It also denied all benefits to unmarried couples. Even though gay couples raise children, McCain would deny them any benefits or legal rights that reflect the real situation they live in.

McCain has all the homophobia one would expect from a man of his years. In McCian’s time, homophobia was rampant and accepted. When McCain was in his formative 20’s, it was the 1950’s. Gays were considered a threat to national security. The majority of people dismissed from the State Department were for accusations of homosexuality. Congress issued a report called "EMPLOYMENT OF HOMOSEXUALS AND OTHER SEX PERVERTS IN GOVERNMENT". The Stonewall riots, the beginning of the gay rights movement, were many years away in 1969. Homosexual acts were illegal in most states. The American Psychiatric Association listed homosexuality as a mental disorder, and that would not change until the 1970’s.

Even though many in leadership in the military now believe that gays can serve openly with distinction and honor, McCain does not. Last April, he wrote a letter to the In an April 16 letter to Servicemembers Legal Defense Network supporting the Don’t ask don’t tell law because it, "unambiguously maintains that open homosexuality within the military services presents an intolerable risk to morale, cohesion and discipline." McCain’s thinking remains strongly rooted in the 1950s.

Next up, McCain’s stance on censorship and cleaning up the airwaves. It is little wonder that he wants the airwaves censored. That way they can’t broadcast the surprisingly inappropriate things his notorious and volcanic temper gets him to blurt out. Such as yelling fuck you at fellow Republican Senator John Cornyn. Or saying to Republican Senator Chuck Grassley during a debate “Your problem is that you're a fucking jerk."

Foul mouthed. Anti- women. Anti-gay. And none of this is unexpected, when Oldy McOldster runs for president.

Sexvestigation

Are we ready for a woman president? I am beginning to come to the very sad conclusion that maybe we are not. I had always thought that a woman would be elected president before a black man. In this historic election where both have a shot, I am seeing far more resistance to a female candidate. And while media pundits look for even coded racist messages about Obama, the outright sexism used against Hillary goes largely uncommented upon. I like both candidates and think that either would make a great president, but I think the lesson from this is that sexism is so endemic in our society that we hardly even notice it. And I find that both surprising and depressing.

Even attacks against Obama have been sexist, rather than racist. Time magazine’s Mark Halperin recently said in an interview that John Edwards thinks that Obama is kind of a pussy.

The New York Times wrote: “For much of her career, Mrs. Clinton served in largely advisory or collaborative management roles” Talk about unsubtly coded messages- collaborative management is well understood as a term for the type of jobs women do. Even though she was a law firm partner, chairman of the board, and director of three public corporations. Collaborative roles- just a woman- never really in charge.

The sexism against Hillary has been pretty relentless. Katie Couric, in an interview, asked Clinton if her nickname in high school was Miss Fridgidaire. Clinton handled the question well, but I would have preferred a comeback like asking Couric if her high school nickname was Miss puts out with everyone. What an asinine sexist question that would never be asked of a man.

Mat Drudge, who is to responsible journalism what hemorrhoids are to sodomy, ran a photo making it look like Hillary is giving fellatio to the microphone.

We’ve already covered the relentless and brutal sexist attacks on MSNBC by Chris Mathews, which brings into focus the latest- MSNBC reporter and commentator David Shuster referring to Chelsea Clinton’s campaigning for her mother as her being pimped out. I can’t imagine him saying that the Romney boys were being pimped out.

Clinton was outraged, pointing out that she is a mother first and a candidate second. Most mom’s don’t appreciate your calling their daughter a whore. And she wrote a letter to MSNBC, saying that their temporary suspension and half hearted apology was not enough. Even though the letter made clear that her complaint was that MSNBC had a pattern of this type of reckless rhetoric, and that they should address the pattern, most media commentators, including many women on the left, misinterpreted the letter as a demand that Shuster be fired, which they called petty. SO quick to criticize a woman candidate for defending her daughter, they never bothered to read the actual letter in context. It is clear that reading comprehension as well as basic research are not that important in modern journalism.  Stephen Kaus on the liberal Huffington Post called the letter prissy and censorious- terms he would never use about a man standing up for his daughter. Sexism is not male or female, republican or democrat, black or white- it is ingrained into our culture so deeply we barely notice it.

Writer and Commentator Christopher Hitchens wrote this in his column on Slate: “Off to the side, snarling with barely concealed rage, are the Clinton machine-minders, who, having failed to ignite the same kind of identity excitement with an aging and resentful female, are perhaps wishing that they had made more of her errant husband having already been "our first black president." Don’t expect him to refer to McCain as aging and resentful, even though he seems always resentful about something, and would be the oldest man to hold the presidency. But an aging woman, that is a problem.

Fox News brings in gender expert Marc Rudov, who stated that "When Barack Obama speaks, men hear, 'Take off for the future.' And when Hillary Clinton speaks, men hear, 'Take out the garbage.' But I don’t expect that they’ll have a race expert who says that when Barack speaks, men hear him saying “where the white women at.”? As racist as that sounds- Rudov is just as violently sexist. The headline on his homepage reads- You are tolerating her nonsense. As long as this type of crap is about women, we seem to tolerate it.

And while at a Hillary campaign event, a white male shouted from the audience “Iron my shirt!”, you won’t hear anyone at an Obama event shout out “Fetch me some water.” Slavery has been eliminated in most parts of the world, but women are subjugated in countless countries, little better than slaves in many of them, and worse off than slaves in some.

Axe cologne put out an ad with Hillary wearing an Obama button- with the slogan the Axe Effect. One whiff and she falls to her knees as an Obama supporter.

Upper Deck published baseball like trading cards featuring the presidential candidates. Barack Obama was depicted as White Sox outfielder Jermaine Dye.  John McCain was depicted as Ted Williams. So, how did they depict Hillary? Perhaps as a member of the all girls All American League? No- as Morgana the kissing bandit, who jumped onto the field to kiss ballplayers. After some some complaints, they pulled the card. Meaning that now, Hillary is not even in the deck. How symbolic is that?

It goes on and on and on. An officially registered anti-Hillary 527  political action committee with the acronym C.U.N.T. that sell t-shirts that say what Hillary really is- you guessed- the acronym for their group, endless other sexist and misogynistic t-shirts, a urinal target with Hillary’s face on it. Bill Kristol calling white women a problem. Hillary’s voice described as shrill- her laugh an insane cackle. The Oliphant cartoon showing Clinton crying at a conference table with America’s enemies on the other side, exclaiming- You guys are mean, while a tiny Bill Clinton says “This is when PMS goes nuclear.. This is not political commentary- it is misogynistic sexist crap that should have no place in a political campaign. A t-shirt

Racism is flat out wrong, and it is as unacceptable in politics as it is in the private sphere. But sexism is just as wrong. And we should be equally unwilling to tolerate it. But sadly, we are.
