Political News

You’re a prostitute. You want to make good money this summer. So, which venue offers you the best opportunities- the democratic convention or the Republican convention?  They are already gearng up for Denver, where the Democrats hold their convention in August. But the big money, according to prostitutes, is at the Republican convention, held in Minneapolis-Saint Paul. "We get a lot more business. I don't know if they're just frustrated because of the family values agenda," one said.  At the last Republican Convention in New York, prostitutes did huge business, traveling from all over the country. Mistress Natasha noted “It always surprises me how many of my clients are not just Republicans but Bush supporters. I think, You wanted me to force you down to your knees when you’re in a pink tutu, but you support Bush? Maybe that should be part of my punishment: ‘You’re going to vote for Bush? Now you’re really going to get it!’ ” Prostitues offered specials such as the $395 one and a half hour Delegates Delight, which included Polariod photos. SO this year, prostitutes expect to do big business in Minneapolis-St. Paul. And that’s just from Senator David Vitter.

Bush keeps telling us how much better things are in Afghanistan. You know, that whole spreading democracy thing. A student of journalism was just sentenced to death there, a sentence that was upheld by the country’s rulers. His crime. The young man downloaded a report from the Internet. Was it about terrorism, pro-Al Queda, a manual on making IEDs. No much more dangerous than that. It was report from a Farsi website which stated that Muslim fundamentalists who claimed the Koran justified the oppression of women had misrepresented the views of the prophet Mohamed. Yes, you can die for simply reading about the idea that women should not be oppressed. Feminism carries a death sentence. He was tried in religious court without legal representation. President Karzai could pardon him, but with the fundamentalists and warlords taking control, his life would be in jeopardy anyway. Bush has been silent on the matter, although Secretary Rice says she will contact the president of Afghanistan about it. Nice little democracy you have there.

And while Saudi Arabia is not a democracy, it is one of the Bush administration’s closest friends in the region. I suspect he admires their latest move. They passed a law limiting the use of the Internet in an attempt to fight terror and immoral activities. But they don’t see terrorism and porn as equals. If you run a terrorism site, you can get 10 years in prison and a 1.3 million dollar fine. Running a porn site is a comparative bargain- only five years in prison and an $800,000 fine. The same goes for sites that violate religious values. The law can be used to go after pretty much anything the government does not like- such as bloggers that write about political prisoners in Saudi Arabi- which is what  Faud Al-Farhan did- the first person arrested under the new law. Expect to see a similar law proposed here.

Did you know that white women are a problem? AT least they are on Fox News, according to the show last Sunday. From Fox News Sunday, commentator BILL KRISTOL said : Look, the only people for Hillary Clinton are the Democratic establishment and white women. The Democratic establishment -- it would be crazy for the Democratic Party to follow an establishment that's led it to defeat year after year. White women are a problem, that's, you know -- we all live with that.  Fox News contributer JUAN WILLIAMS : Not me! Had Kristol known how Hillary would sweep the Hispanic vote on Super Tuesday, he probably would have interjected that Latina women are a problem too. Just not something he has to live with. Kristol was not thinking about the possibility of living with non-caucasion women because I suspect his only real encounters with them are as a client. And you don’t marry those kind of women.

WLBT 3 is on your side. This tough investigative television news team goes undercover in the most dangerous and crime infested places- like the local Adult Video and Book store in Jackson. Jackson police have raided the store twice after undercover operations discovered that the store was selling sex toys. Three people were arrested and several boxes of sex toys were seized.  But that was last year, so the intrepid reporters at channel 3 decided to launch their own investigation. I am quoting here now from there web site-  A "3 on Your Side" undercover investigation shows that the business is back at it again and is not even discreet about selling the devices.

Reporter Kandiss Crone walked into the store and said, "Hi, I'm going to a bachelorette party. I'm looking for a sex toy."

After looking over the stock, Kandiss said, "Can I have that purple one?"

As soon as the sale was completed, our team walked back into the store to confront owner Charles Hobby -- this time with cameras rolling.

Kandiss: "Hi, Charles, I'm Kandiss Crone from WLBT. I understand this business was raided for selling sex toys illegally. I just purchased this sex toy, and it is still illegal to sell them in the state of Mississippi. Even though you were raided last year and you're still selling them, what is your response to that?"

I can think of quite a few proper responses, none of them that WLBT could air. Instead, the owner tried to explain that the toy could be used as a general purpose massager and was therefore not banned by the law. A law that could put you in jail for six months with a $5000 fine for selling a vibrator intended to pleasure you sexually. Our dear Kandiss would have none of that. She went to the Jackson Assistant Chief, who explained that the store is not a priority for local vice and narcotics officers- they are busy with prostitutes, drugs, and trying to reduce violent crime.

My question is, what happened to the sex toys they bought that they claimed were illegal after the investigation. I think I can guess what the buzzing sound underneath kandiss desk is.

Pete Ashdown set up the largest wireless free network in Utah. But if a new bill by Representative Brad Daw passes, he’ll have to shut it down. In fact, all free wireless networks would have to shut down. The bill requires that all public wireless networks  restrict access to minors, or be held liable for damages if minors access pornographic material. Of course, there is no definition of pornographic, so that can be almost anything. And Daws doesn’t seem worried about minors accessing other potentially harmful material, such as how to make a bomb. In the world of the anti-sex crowd, the only thing harmful on the Internet is sex. Forget about racist sites, forget about sites advocating violence, forget about the mountains of misinformation. The bill would require that anyone accessing a wireless network would have to use a credit card. And we know, no kids have access to credit cards. Personally, I don’t think the Internet is for kids. I have no problem with banning them entirely, setting up a sandboxed kidnet, making it a crime for anyone under 18 to access the Internet. I’m fine with that, because there is a lot more on the net than just sex that is inappropriate for kids. But leave adults and the free exchange of ideas alone. A world made completely kid friendly is a world where adults are force to live as children.

Sex Science

Welcome to another Sex Science Sunday, where we focus on all of the latest going on in the world of science that has to do with sex.

Circumcision has been shown to be helpful in reducing the spread of AIDS, something quite useful in African nations devastated by the disease. Many men avoid the procedure, though, because of a fear that it would reduce sexual pleasure. This has long been the rallying cry of the anti-circumcision crowd. And it is difficult for a circumcised man who was circumcised at birth to know if he has reduced pleasure or sensation because of it. A recent study, though, shows no indication that circumcision reduces sexual pleasure. Taking part in the study were 4, 456 sexually experienced Ugandan men aged from 15 to 49 who did not have the HIV virus. 2,210 of these men received circumcision while 2,246 had their circumcision delayed for 24 months. Researchers then checked for the levels of sexual desire, satisfaction and sexual performance for both groups of men over a period of six, 12 and 24 months. "Our study clearly shows that being circumcised did not have an adverse effect on the men who underwent the procedure when we compared them with the men who had not yet received surgery" said co-author Professor Ronald H Gray from the Bloomberg School of Health at Johns Hopkins University. Circumcision takes away a little skin, not sexual pleasure. Pinch your foreskin hard and then pinch a woman’s clitoris just as hard, then after you get up off the floor try and tell me that there is any thing even remotely the same between male and female circumcision. Female circumcision is brutal mutilation designed to destroy sexual pleasure, male circumcision can save lives.

You’d think that the annual meeting of the American Economics Association would be a very dry affair. Leave it to Freakonomics author Steven Levitt to liven things up. Levitt presented preliminary findings from a study conducted with Sudhir Venkatesh, a sociologist at Columbia University. Their research on the economics of street prostitution combines official arrest records with data on 2,200 umm business transaction. The study was done with the cooperation of sex workers in three Chicago districts. The study came to a number of interesting conclusions. Earnings are pretty good. Sex workers receive $25-30 per hour, about four times what they could expect outside of prostitution. The risk of legal action is low. As has been explained to me by many a prostitute, the study found that it is more likely that a prostitute will have sex with a police officer than be officially arrested by one. This amounts to about a 3 percent overhead of having to give away services, but it is a good investment as it helps you avoid arrest.

The risks are high, though- a high risk of STD infection, and a high risk of violence.

One of the more surprising and controversial findings of the study was that when pimps are involved, prostitutes appear to do better, with pimps both providing protection and paying efficiency wages. Prostitutes with pimps face lesser risk of arrest, and earn about 50 percent more.

Prices differ greatly across sexual acts. Black customers pay less on average than whites or Hispanics, all else being equal. Repeat clients (especially when they are black) pay less on average than do new customers. There is relatively little systematic variation across women in the prices they charge, in other words, being more attractive does not seem to increase what you can charge on the street. And there is a shockingly low rate of condom use, just 25 percent, with very little premium paid for not using condoms. They were even able to calculate the cost of demand shock,, the increase of cost when demand goes up, in this case over the July 4th holiday. In this case, the price increase over demand shock was 30%.

In the conclusion of the study, they said it was difficult to apply the findings to any other business, but it would be interesting to read a similar study on legal prostitution, which exists in the U.S. in only one state. That it exists illegally in such abundance in every other state calls into question the economic viability of our ineffective ban on prostitution- which if overturned might lead to safer working conditions and more tax revenue.

Sometimes you have to wonder whether research is inspired by a quest for knowledge, or an obsession- in this case, and obsession with legs. Polish researchers at Wroclaw University tried to determine e the perfect leg length for attractiveness. The conclusion of Dr Boguslaw Pawlowski, who led the study, was that long legs signal health, which we find more attractive. Short legs are linked with a higher risk of cardiovascular disease and type II diabetes and with higher levels of a body fat called triglyceride. An extra five percent in leg length was considered most attractive, but in a contradictory finding that casts doubt on Boguslaw’s contention, an extra 10 percent in length was found less attractive. No research was done on those long legs that seem to go on forever. And I have to wonder, even though this was published in the New Scientist (I checked), is someone pulling my leg?

Speaking of legs, we all know that a good pair of heels can make a leg more shapely. For my wife, shoes in and of themselves are sexy- its like a fetish thing. I don’t really get the whole shoe thing, though, even though it is a very common fetish. But why does my wife get such a sexual charge out of wearing tall shoes, as do many women? Researchers in Italy (of course) may have an answer. Dr Maria Cerruto, a urologist at the University of Verona, who shares my wife’s love of shoes, measured the electrical activity in the pelvic muscles of women when they held their feet at different angles. From that, she discovered that women who held their feet at a 15-degree angle to the ground had posture as good as women who wore flat shoes, and showed up to 15% less electrical activity in their pelvic muscles.  According to Dr Cerruto, “Heels affect pelvic floor activity, reducing pain and improving your health. We now hope to prove that wearing heels during daily activity may reduce the need for pelvic exercises.” The pelvic floor muscles are an important part of the female body. As well as helping sexual performance and satisfaction, they provide support to the pelvic organs. The research is to be reported in the journal European Urology. And I know when Kris hears this, we’re going to be buying some new shoes.

And speaking of my wife Kris, she identifies strongly as a bisexual. There is some new research on that as well. She knows that it is not a phase, a claim made by some about female bisexuality. Research published in the journal Developmental Psychology, by Lisa Diamond, associate professor of Psychology and Gender studies at the University of Utah, concludes that bisexuality in women can be a lifelong, distinct and consistent sexual orientation.  It takes research to figure out what most bisexual women already know. The study looked at women between 18 and 25 over a 10 year period. The study found that Bisexual and Unlabeled women were more likely than Lesbians to change their sexual identity over the 10 years. The Bisexual or Unlabeled women tended to switch between Bisexual and Unlabeled rather than to Lesbian or Heterosexual. For those women, Bisexuality seemed to be a natural state. And as to the claim that bisexual women tend to have relationship problems, the study found that 89 percent of the self-identified Bisexual women in the study were involved in long-term monogamous relationships that had lasted at least five years. That is higher than found in the lesbians in the study. Whether in a monogamous relationship with a man or woman, they still identified as bisexual. Professor Diamond said, “Hopefully, the media, the general public, and professional Psychologists will no longer treat the phenomenon of female Bisexuality with skepticism.”

Yes, doctors have been saying that sex during pregnancy was safe- up to a point. That point was the final weeks of pregnancy.  Researchers have now debunked the myth that engaging in intercourse during the final weeks of pregnancy can hasten delivery.  Researchers at the Ohio State University Medical Centre found no link between sexual intercourse and premature labor. According to lead researcher Jonathan Schaffir, women who are more comfortable late in pregnancy may be more likely to engage in sexual activity and women who experience abdominal discomfort or pelvic pressure -- possible signs of earlier delivery – aren’t going to want to have sex.

Why do women have abortions. According to the anti-abortion crowd, its because they are selfish bitches. A new study from the Guttmacher Institute shows just the opposite. The majority of women who have had abortions also have children. Women who had abortions in the study did so because of their concerns about being a good parent, either being unable to effectively provide for a child, or because of the negative consequences it would have on their existing children.

The study is titled Intercourse Orgasm Consistency, Concordance of Women's Genital and Subjective Sexual Arousal, and Erotic Stimulus Presentation Sequence. Translated into English, the Dutch study published in the Journal of Sex and Marital Therapy found that women who are more consistent at orgasming during intercourse are more turned on by looking at porn.

It’s a pill that prevents as many as 30,000 deaths from cancer a year, according to a new study . A pill that millions of Americans take. And it keeps you from getting pregnant. A new study by the Collaborative Group on Epidemiological Studies of Ovarian Cancer -published in the Lancet shows that use of oral contraceptives dramatically cuts the risk of ovarian cancer. The preventative effect lasts for decades after a woman stops taking the pill. There has been talk of making oral contraceptives available over the counter- something that would reduce their cost. This is strongly opposed by social conservatives, who fear that it would lead to more women having sex, or having fewer abortions- oh wait, they are supposed to be against abortion too. Maybe we should just market them as an anti-cancer drug with benefits.

You want to make powerful but extremely tiny robots, known as nanobots, and you need a way to make them mobile. And you need a way to power them. Scientists are looking at the tail of the human sperm as a model, which propels the sperm through the body at the rate of 7 inches per hour. Pretty good for something that tiny- equivalent to about 3.7 miles for a human being- a record breaking achievement. The little engine that basically led to all of us may power the next generation of tiny robots that may someday act as miniature medical devices traveling inside the human body.

And in our bad science segment, I really like commentator and Air America host Rachel Maddow. There was a study published in the American Journal of Health Behavior, that shows that abstinence education is effective in reducing the onset of sexual initiation. It was favorably compared against an extremely minimal sex education curriculum in Virginia, a notoriously sex phobic state, and is in no way comprehensive. David Landry, senior research associate at the Guttmacher Institute, points out that 10 percent of the student sin the class had sex within a short period of time- not something to brag about. Landry notes that while isolated studies may show that abstinence-only programs have a certain result, they are still providing no information for teens who do engage in sexual activity. And all of the studies show that most of them will.
