Political News

While we are hypersensitive about racist comments, with the pundits scanning every utterance for some hidden racist message in this run up to the presidency, sexism is prevalent and hardly commented upon. There is even a Republican operative sponsored anti-Hillary non-profit political group called Citizens United Not Timid.  Yeah, CUNT, very clever. They have a red white and blue female crotch logo. Hardly any mention of that type of sexism in the news. Can you imagine a similar group that was an acronym for the N word? Political commentators would lose their minds. Things are not much better on the progressive side. On a recent promotional ad for a progressive talk radio station, it pointed out that if Hillary is elected, that will mean at least 24 years with either a Clinton or a Bush in power. Then the announcer asks, don’t we have a bigger gene pool than that? Apparently, he believes that a woman not only takes her husband’s name, she also takes his genes. It would be so much simpler if Hillary had simply kept her name. Then the attacks would be a lot more convoluted- I don’t want a Rodham related to Clinton by marriage in the White House.

Slogans on license plates. A great little fundraiser for the state and for charities- since the fees are shared with the charity sponsoring the slogan. But what if the slogan is controversial? That is the case with the “Choose Life” slogan sponsored by the Arizona Life Coalition. A federal appeals court has ruled that the state has to provide it- but the real reason many states don’t want this is because they don’t want to be forced to also have opposing views, like “women for choice.” That is the case in South Carolina, where they specifically approved anti-abortion slogans and banned pro-choice slogans. A federal appeals court ruled against them as well. That is the problem with free speech- it isn’t free unless it applies to everyone.

McCain sure as hell isn’t the maverick politician I remember, and he has all the ignorance and phobia about sex you would expect from a really really old white guy who doesn’t have a Playboy Mansion. We’ve reported on his ignorance about sexual issues before, but now he is using anti-sexual issues to win the conservative base. His latest was a robocall message in Florida the night of the primary: “"Mitt Romney thinks he can fool us. He supported abortion on demand, even allowed a law mandating taxpayer-funding for abortion. He says he changed his mind, but he still hasn't changed the law. He told gay organizers in Massachusetts he would be a stronger advocate for special rights than even Ted Kennedy. Now, it's something different." Wow. Many lies in one short message from the engineer of the straight talk express. I am no Romney fan, but the truth is the courts forced him to accept taxpayer-funding of abortions, he can’t change any laws as he is no longer governor of anywhere, and special rights is a code word for I hate the damn fags who want equal rights, even though equal rights is something each and every one of us wants to have. McCain opposed hate crimes legislation that would have included gays in a time when gay bashing is on the rise. Last May he said that our national security would be at grave risk if we allowed gays to openly serve in the military. He supports a constitutional ban on gay marriage if the states can’t do it. If McCain gets the nomination, it will be a contest between an out of touch old white guy and either a black or a woman. It is going to be very interesting.

The Mayor of Detroit, Kwame Kilpatrick has been caught up in a sex scandal when emails were released revealing that he was having a long term affair with his chief of staff. It is something he denied in court, under oath, so now he faces a perjury charge. He apparently did not follow the White House’s lead by simply destroying all evidence. Haven’t people learned yet not to use workplace email for affairs, or for criminal activity. Of course, in this country, either can be damaging. The difference is, that one is against the law, and the other is nobody’s damn business. We need a federal law protecting sexual privacy. Your private sex life should not be anyone else’s concern, and the people who reveal private information like that should be subject to a lawsuit. Or worse. Sure, it will put a damper on the gossip rags, but revealing private information about people’s sex lives has always been used for mischief- blackmail, political destruction, dirty tricks. Why don’t we insist that our privacy be protected? Oh wait. We aren’t even all that upset that the government has been monitoring every phone call we make, and the president now insists that the telecoms get immunity for participating in that- without explaining why they need immunity for doing something legal or why it is so important that he would veto a bill without it, letting the terrorists win.

Gary Indiana, of song fame, was one of the foulest cities I have ever been in. It just smelled bad. That bad smell is seeping into the rest of the state, at least where women’s reproductive rights are concerned. The Senate just passed a bill allowing pharmacists to refuse to dispense emergency contraception. You know, the pills that keep you from getting pregnant but do not induce an abortion so that you won’t need an abortion. But don’t worry. They have that covered to. They also passed a bill that requires abortion providers to make the medically questionable claim that an abortion may be painful for the fetus, and that "an embryo formed by the fertilization of a human ovum by a human sperm immediately begins to divide and grow as human physical life." They’ll be force to read that. So basically, they want to force doctors to infer that if you go through with this abortion, you are a murdering cunt.  I guess they want to make sure that there are not any special rights for women. Meaning, you know, rights.

Entertainment

NYPD Blue had some of the best acting ever on television, along with top notch writing. It is being rerun in HD and looks great and holds up very well. I’ve been watching. And one of my favorite episodes is when the young son of detective andy sipowicz, played by the brilliant Dennis Franz, accidentally sees Andy’s girlfriend and fellow detective Connie McDowall, played by Charlotte Ross, stepping out of the shower. It is an amusing scene, and later when Connie asks if she wants him to pick up his son, he replies, “No, he wanted to go to Hooters.”  Nobody makes a big deal out of it. It is something that happens in real life all of the time. Okay, actually, the FCC is making a big deal out of it. The FCC wants to fine the stations that aired it 1.43 million dollars. It aired in 2003. The agency said the show was indecent because "it depicts sexual organs and excretory organs — specifically an adult woman's buttocks."  Why this particular episode bothers them when flashes of skin happened a lot on the show is open to debate. The stations argue that showing a woman’s buttocks does not really apply. Maybe if she had spread her cheeks, but a little buttocks hardly counts as an obscene showing of an excretory organ. The FCC thought the scene with Charlotte Ross “dwelled” on her nudity and was “shocking and titillating”, but from an artistic point of view it makes sense with the boy coming in and accidentally invading her privacy. You can catch the scene on YouTube, where it is very popular. While to the FCC this is all about a butt, for the rest of us, we know it is really all about the asses at the FCC.

Kris was home sick this week, she had watched the Tyra Banks show, and she asked me, “is she just crazy?” I don’t know, but her recent bra burning stunt seemed a little crazy. She had half her talk show audience go outside with her into the New York City cold to do a little bra burning. The bra burning was in honor of the book B.O.O.B.S, a story about breast cancer and it’s survivors. Sure, a rare few breast cancer survivors may not technically need bras, but isn’t that a little sick? Other than that somewhat twisted connection, what does bra burning have to do with breast cancer? And does it really count as any form of symbolic protest when you are burning bras provided by someone else, since the ladies in the picture clearly are not burning their own bras, but for some reason going shirtless and showing off their own. I must be missing something.

And in who is getting naked now, Pamela Anderson steps up, although it is certainly not a first time for her. It is at this venue though. She’ll be performing at the Crazy Horse nude review in Paris February 14th and 15th. She’ll be doing a striptease on a Harley Davidson.

And the latest from Peta in the campaign against fur, their very first Latina- Roselyn Snachez, from CBS’ hit drama Without a Trace. This campaign has finally won me over- I’d rather they be naked than wearing fur as well.

I like nudity in mainstream film, but Downloading Nancy, which was shown at Sundance, sounds like a film I could make an exception for. Reviewers have been calling it the worst sundance film, completely unwatchable, and there have been many reports on all of the people who walked out. It stars Mario Bello as a self-destructive woman who hires a hit man to off her via the Internet, a service I have yet to come across in all of my web surfing. While waiting for him, she decides to do a little self-mutilation with a razor blade. The hit man ties her up and cuts her while having sex with her. He gets her feet snapped in mousetraps, he uses her vagina as an ash tray, and uses shards of glass. One reviewer wrote that it was like the film was raping his face. I think I’ll pass on this one.

Cold Heart Canyon comes out Fe 15th. It  is about a woman who has a dream that her sister Heather is in danger, a dream that comes true. It is from writer/director  Janine Gosselin, and stars Aubrey Caldwell and Barbara Suitor.  Heather and lots of other characters find reasons to get naked, which is why you have Holy Morgan billed only as Call Girl and Cassie Courtland billed only as mistress.

Silk come out on DVD February 25th. If you like seeing Keira Knightly naked, you may be a little disappointed as those scenes are on the dark side. But Sei Ashina does very much enjoy her nude swim. The plot is not what you expect- its about a French silkworm smuggler who goes to Japan in search of worms who instead finds love with a powerful man’s concubine. Bet you didn’t see that coming from the title.

In theatres now is the Diving Bell and the Butterfly. It is based on the autobiography of paraplegic  Jean-Dominique Bauby. The only thing that works is his left eye, and the story is told from that viewpoint. Here we see Marie Meyer in a modeling assignement. I’m not quite sure what she is modeling.

Also in theatres now but primarily art houses is 4 months, 3 weeks and 2 days. Rather than the feelgood story about accidental pregnancy that seems the norm in the U.S., this Romanion film looks at the 1980’s when abortions there were illegal there and often led to death. It is not a happy look. Here Laura Vissuli faces an illegal and dangerous procedure.

Virgin Territory is a romantic comedy set in Italy during the Black Death, a time you would not think of as having either a lot of romance or a lot of comedy.  Inspired by Boccacio’s classic Decameron, a group of young Florentines escape to the countryside and tell each other stories of love and adventure while waiting for the plague to end in the city. It stars Hayden Christainsen and Mischa Barton. This countryside scene features the very naked Kate Groombridge. There is also a lovely scene featuring two nude women giving a man a bath.

Interview

This interview is about vaginas. But out of respect for the topic, I’m not going to show any pictures, because it just doesn’t seem appropriate. Although showing pictures of vaginas would be intended to celebrate them, it could come across as exploitive- the opposite of our intent. This is the least sexy topic we have ever covered on the show, but its an important one. It is about female genital mutilation, and an organization that is doing something surprising about it. Sure, we all want it stopped, but what about the women who have been mutilated? This is where they are doing something new and important. I am talking with Laura Turstinyek from Clitoraid.  (No transcript for the interview)
